I am just curious what changes you guys have made in your decoy spreads later in the season. I have moved down to only around a dozen. Just wondering you guys thoughts on changes to your spread this late in the season. Or if you guys even make any changes? We have been seeing plenty of birds they just act like they don't wanna decoy. Thanks.

We used 3 decoys Saturday and smoked em....We threw 3 out with the intention of putting a few more if we needed to....we never needed to
They're not looking for one thing right....they're looking for one thing wrong.

Are you guys using mojo's? I have all but phased them out. They seem to flare more birds then they bring in.

Used about a dozen on Saturday on the lake and although my shooting was poor I had several opportunities to get a limit. On Sunday only through out 2 on a pond and smoked them in about 15 minutes. Iused a jerk cord both days with no calling. When the birds would come over I would give a pull on the cord to creat rippels and the ducks would come in.

Find the "X" and wait for them to come in. Like Gigemaggies said, we used 3 this weekend and they were prolly close to 75-100 yards away. Had no problem shooting them at 30 yards. Gotta be on the "X" this late in the year!
If you build it, they will come

We had about 4 dzn out saturday. That's the most I've used this year. We were also on big water. No mojo or jerk rig. Had plenty of wind to move the deks around.

The best thing I ever did several years back was quit using small decoys.
I will not buy any mallard decoy if it is under 22" in length.

Went out yesterday morning with a dozen and a Mojo. Birds reacted just fine. Mojo literally fell apart about halfway through the hunt. But the ducks dropped in with little to no hesitation with it up and running. All it comes down to is finding out what the ducks like to see where you're hunting at. If they reacted well to big spreads I'd put out every decoy I have. If the shy away from the big ones, throw out fewer. It’s all about adapting to what the ducks want.
We interrupt this marriage for hunting season.

At this point in the season, are you guys pairing up hens and drakes? The majority of birds that I have been seeing that try to decoy are pairs. Drake, and hen mallard. Pair after pair either decoy or fly over. I know they are pairing at this point but should that be put into place with the decoys as well? Anyone have any thoughts?

They may come in as pairs, but take a drive in the country side and look at the ponds right now. I have been seeing 12 to 20 packs huddled up close to each other. My spread looks the same and I have been having great success. This is for hunting med sized tanks.

Ok, thanks for the advice everyone. I primarily hunt public and when I am watching ducks on the water they seem to be paired up or in pretty small groups my two private tanks have not held birds any this year. Thanks again for all the help.
