Originally, the plans were to go out with my hunting buddy tomorrow afternoon so we will be there for opening morning. Now, it looks like I will be going it alone opening morning.
Since I don't want to deal with field dressing and transporting a deer to the processor by myself, I may try turkey hunting in the morning and then do an evening deer hunt when my buddy will be there.
Do you guys normally hunt by yourself? I always thought it was safer with the buddy system and obviously easier to dress and quarter a deer with some help.
Should I try to hunt opening morning for deer?

It's half & half with me. I've deer hunted many days with my father when he was still here and then I've hunted alone too. We would each field dress our own deer and start hunting again. Same as with quartering it up, but if we were together, we always helped one another, except for field dressing.
Don't let that stop you from missing the morning hunt unless you're uncomfortable with trying it alone. Sometimes we get that way...my dad did after he had a triple bypass.
Good luck this weekend in whatever you choose! Chris

You can't field dress your own deer?
24 hours in a day. 24 beers in a case. Coincidence, I think not.

Hey, I'm a relative newbie. I just printed out the instructions for field dressing and will take them with me.

If I am going to hunt as much as I want to, I have to go alone. I am not as comfortable doing that as I used to be, but it does not stop me if I really want to go. If your buddy is going to be there that afternoon, you might as well go ahead and hunt, and unless you are uncomfortable with having to field dress one by yourself, you could field dress one if you got it, prop it open up in a shady spot, put a game bag or something over it to try and keep the flies out, then when your buddy got there you could both quarter it up and put it in the ice chest. If this is the case, you might be better off alone for the first one....that way your buddy can't make fun of you if you " HURL " LOL

What Randall said...
Plans can change sometimes in an instant - even yours. I always stay ready and you will too as time goes on. One way to start is getting out there alone and enjoy it at your pace.

I hunt alone quite a bit. And I would look at it as a great stroke of luck. You have that much less disturbance there to mess with your hunt. Now you get to have it just like yu want, you can spend a hour tip toeing into your stand like a ninja and get that big deer. I just love it when I know I am the only one of the land I hunt. I carry a phone so if things get ugly I could call for help.
But I would get yourself a gambel for hanging the deer. I toss the rope over a tree and then attach the rope to my bumper, back up and the deer is in the air, no fuss.
And field dressing them is no big deal. Just go slow, I start from the rear and the the but work all done up nice and neat so when I open the body cavity it's just a cut, split the pelvis and pull out the guts. I always feel like I forgot how to clean a deer before the first deer of the season, then I get one and hang it and 10 minutes later it's done. Like riding a bike! Just dont drop your knife in the inside and your gonna be fine!
best of luck

More often than not I hunt alone and have the camp to myself. Sometimes I prefer it. Cleaned my first deer alone and it only took me 30 minutes. Was glad not to have a peanut gallery offering color commentary. Just remember when you make the sternum to pelvis cut not to stick the knife in too far.... If you hear that PPFFFFT.. you better get moving and get that puppy cleaned. Do what you are comfortable with. Are you more worried about transporting your kill alone? One person trying to drag or carry a deer a long ways can get old fast. I always go get the truck and bring mine back to camp to clean. We have an A frame for the gambril and use the truck to pull it up with. Too easy. Never was a big fan of field dressing on the ground. But that's just me.

All the time. Don't be afraid to try field dressing your deer alone man. Their really isn't anything to it. I know a lot of people that have never done one. I got a buddy that is 40+ years old who don't know how. I should say didn't, I cleaned a couple for him and now he knows. I don't know if it was a blessing or a curse. When I shot my first deer my dad hung it up and said watch boy, I'm only gonna show you this once, and he did. The next time I shot one he said get to it, you need the practice, 25 years later I'm still practicing. He ain't cleaned a deer he's shot since he showed me how to, keeps giving me the you need practice speech. HMmmmmm I'm starting to see a pattern here

JB you made me think of something I done to my buddy that was UUUuuuGGLY! I got a buddy that I grew up with since 5th grade, we have done more crap together than I can remember. One of those things is hunting and fishing. We have cleaned many deer together but he has this lil problem, no matter how many he's cleaned if you hit the gut sack he's gonna hurl! One night we had 7 or 8 deer to clean so we roll up our sleeves and get to it. Well rite out of the gate he hits the sack and it sprays all over him, and he starts calling RALPH. He turns to me and says forget it I'm going home, he strips down to his frooty looms and says gimme a ride. UH...NO...you ain't leaving me here to do all this myself, he says watch me and proceeds to walk home since he only lived about a mile down the road. Well now we can't have him thinking he's got the upper hand here. I let him get a couple hundred yards down the road and called the county police. I said hey theres this drunk down here running around in his underwear flashing women. He's even knocked on some doors just to flash people. They come out and hauled him to town for a chit chat. I finished cleaning the deer, went home took me a bath and ate me some supper, then I went and bailed him out. It was all I could do to keep from laughing at him on the way home. All he kept saying was if I ever find out who called the law on me I'm gonna....I was dieing inside!

Scott, I have hunted by myself pretty often. I can't say it has been by choice but if it means not hunting then I'll hunt bt myself. As long as you are comfortable being in the woods you should be fine. I always make sure someone knows where I am going (tell your buddy where exactly you will be hunting) so they know where to start looking in case something amiss happens.

Ok, I have an SUV not a pickup truck. So, I think I'm better off quartering and tossing it in a cooler than keeping it field dressed only and taking it whole to the processor. One person can't get the carcass up on the roof of the SUV and I don't have a trailer or attachment for extra cargo using the receiver hitch.
I don't have a tarp to wrap the carcass in and put it inside the SUV either. Don't need a bloody SUV interior. lol

We have 640 acres and my buddy knows where I will be hunting. I have a very productive tripod stand that is only around 100 yds from camp.

Dude, You will find hunting by yourself is much easier. I was telling my wife the other day that I was going to shoot HER if she didnt quiet down. Just make sure that you tell someone where your going and when your back. I try to take a cell phone on SILENT ( very important but thats another story ).
Feild dressing is not hard. Just get the blood and guts out of the deer without cutting the stomach or intestine.
Good Luck. Seth

Scott, If the weather is going to be as warm as they say, it is a good idea to go ahead and put the deer on ice. I generally put all of my deer on ice for a couple of days before I process them. I have found that by doing so, you get rid of all the blood and the gamy smell, if it has one. I have also found that by a quick clean kill, there is generally less of a smell of flavor than an animal that runs for quite a while before expiring. When you put the animal on ice, just keep the drain open. The bloody water will leave the cooler and clean the meat up really well. I just keep adding ice for tow to three days. Just my suggestions.

Hunting alone gets a little lonely, but I hunt alone most of the time. If I had better hunting buddies on my lease I might not hunt alone as much. I bow hunt most of the time, so fewer people on the lease is usually better where I’m at. Don't make to much out of field dressing a deer. Rip it open pull out the inside and hang if that’s your pref. Otherwise cape it, take the straps, and front and rear leg quarters and the rest has little to no value and put it in a cooled with ice. KEEP the head for the game warden if you get checked. It can get a little more tricky if you want to mount it, but still the same concept, just don't cut the hide beyond the front legs which makes caping a little more challenging. I would take both the rifle and the shotgun and if you see a deer you want take it. Good luck

Hunting alone get lonely it does but some most of the time it is so nice. you dont half to cook for two and you dont half to worry about some one being loud next to you. I hunt alot by my self it si not a big deal. I pray to god all the time that i get to go alone but the girl always says i want to go. Just makes things alot better and easier when you dont have some one to tend to. Also can stay in the stand all day and not hear some one complain about it

I understand. Luckily, my hunting partner showed up Saturday morning. I shot a big buck that needed both of us to get to camp, field dress and quarter. One guy would have really struggled with him.
