270, much easier to find ammo IMO.

What about Marlin or Mossberg?

I love my two Vanguards (last generation SUB MOA Models), but last year I picked up a Savage Weather Warrior in 300 Win Mag, with the Accu Stock and Accu Trigger before an Elk hunt. ...it's the only weapon I've taken out of the safe in a year.

I've never owned a Savage before this one, but I will most certainly buy another.

In terms of the most bang for the buck, the Marlin X7 has been getting a lot of good press lately.

I agree with the 270, mine is a model 700. Been shooting it for over 20 years now.

If you're just now buying a rifle, do not get a .308Win. Ammo is almost impossible to find.

My deer rifle is a Tikka .270Win, FWIW.

The Ruger American is getting great reviews as is the Marlin. For the money, Tikka makes the best rifle in the 500-600 range. The T3 is light, can be commonly found in left hand, and extremely accurate. I have had many different rifles, from Cooper's to Weatherby's and the Tikkas have performed the best. Used to have a 270 and a 30.06, but have switched to the 270wsm and just recently the 300wsm.

My dad gave me a Weatherby Vanguard (synthetic) .270 with a 3x9 Leo when I graduated from high school over 20 years ago. I have since collected many high caliber rifles that are more accurate with attention to details and are more suitable in specific situations, but if I am walking anywhere or climbing into a stand in Texas I will be taking the trustworthy Vanguard. It has two kills for December 2012 alone at over 100 yards. It is my go to gun for everyday hunting medium game at short distances (50-200 yds). Ammo is abundant, it's light, it's inexpensive, it's a very popular make and caliber, and it has a simple look to it.

I recently bought a Weatherby Vanguard 7mm remmag. I use it more for long range shooting but I do deer hunt with it a little bit. I love it and will buy many more Weatherby's in the future due to reliability and accuracy. IMO it is the best bang for the buck.

A lot of people making comments about the Vanguards, but not referencing them as being Series I or II.

I know the most recent Series II rifles come with an accuracy guarantee, but I read somewhere that it's only good when shooting "premium" ammo. And a recent review by Field and Stream found the Series II to be the most inaccurate (widest grouping) in the test.

Has anyone noticed any differences between the Vanguard Series I and II? There has been mention of the Series II being more expensive and closer to that $500 price point.

Not bashing but just suggesting that people add more clarity to their posts since the Series I rifles are still widely available.

For what it is worth, in a recent MOA study performed by Field and Stream late last year, the Marlin XL had higher MOA accuracy than both Vanguard, Savage, Winchester and Remington 700. I believe it was .75" for 3 shots commpared to about 1.25-2.5" for the rest of them. Vanguard was on the higher end 2+".

More than say a .243 or .25-.06 but you can buy reduced recoil ammo for it or even grain down to 130 grain.. Would be a great TX whitetail caliber.

The Vanguard I just bought guarantee's .99 inch grouping with their ammo or higher end factory ammo such as Hornady etc.

Off their website. FYI

SUB-MOA Accuracy Guarantee ensures .99" or less 3-shot group at 100 yards when used with Weatherby factory or premium ammunition.

Depends on your son. I have that gun and it's a light-weight rifle, it doesnt bother me when I shoot deer with it but when shooting targets I def know it's there. Great guns for the money though.

They do have hollow butt stocks so you could take the recoil pad off and put some lead shot or a bag of sand in it to help tame the recoil abit. I like mine light though. Or you could try to find the managed recoil rounds. They also make the X guns in .223 (.22-250 heavy barrel only, prob too heavy) .243 .25-06 7-08 & .308 All those should have quite a bit less recoil, I'd hate to shoot the 30-06.

My Remington .270 kicks less with their Managed Recoil ammo than my little Browning .243 with standard ammo, just as the ballastic data says it should.

With all my shots being 100 yards or less, I've come to enjoy the comfort that goes with the MR loads. And I've yet to loose a deer or hog while shooting it. The most recent was a 200 lb boar that I took last week with a neck shot at 80 yards. I believe Remington says it's effective range is 200 yards.
