This looks like a perfect solution to expansion/penetration for tough critters. I'd like to know if anyone has done this, tell me about it please.

I stay away from the .45acp for a hunting round, my favorite hunting revolver is a Ruger Black hawk .45 colt, with heavy loads like Buffalo Bore or handloads, wouldnt hesitate against anything in North America shy of big bears or maybe moose. .45acps are for people in my opinion.

This is what everyone says it would be nice if someone who has actual experience could reply because everyone has their reasons for picking a caliber. I simply want to hear from anyone who has shot a hog with .45 acp and what happened.

I have shot 2 hogs with a 45 ACP, both were pushing 180 pounds. I used 200 hollow points from about 30 yards (bow stand). It killed them both, however both ran forever and a day before I found them - plus a couple follow up shots. Both were hits behind the shoulder with no exit, so the blood trail was light!! The only reason I tried it was my buddy told me he's killed several and the results were awesome. Come to find out, he carries a 10MM now.. Now I use a 454 Super Red Hawk, that thing will kill anything big enough to die!

You can see my thread about 34 hogs in one trap. I used .45ACP 230Gr JHP's from my Glock 21 to dispatch them. You could put them down with one shot to the head, anywhere else and it would take a few more. Didn't try HP's.
I wouldn't hunt with one but shooting them in a trap is different.
Good Hunting, Gary

Most people up here in AK will carry a bigger caliber handgun when out and about if we encounter bears. Otherwise you are just going to tickle it ans make it mad. On the otherhand put enough rounds in it and it will die.

I have used Buffalo Bore hard cast 255gr .45 ACP to take out a few hogs. One was a 160lb sow and it broke both shoulders. No experience with HP's or bears, but I read Tim Sundles @ Buffalo Bore designed this round in pursuit of a .45 ACP bear stopper.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I appreciate the info especially the first hand accounts. I feel 45 acp is plenty for a hog as long as you stay away from hollow points. If any of yall ever uses that federal hst on any wild game please post here.

This season I actually had the opportunity to actually shoot a hog with my .45 using federal pdx1 hollow points staggered with federal hydra shoks the hog was running left to right and was about 15 yards maybe 20 yards the .45 dropped it in its tracks so if anyone wants to know based on my experience .45 acp is effective on hogs at this range I will have to try a longer shot if I get the chance.

XD45acp HP at 20 yards. Dropped like a rock. Shot him in the left eye.

On the otherhand put enough rounds in it and it will die. My carry gun in Tok Junction in 1973 was a Ruger 41mag. With Rattlers and such to consider, I'll stick to my Taurus Judge with #4 shot and Hornaday 225gr FTX
