Ok I got my new FoxPro. How long do you typically call at a time and do you change your call or use the same the entire time? How long do you usually stay at one place before moving. I have set up 2 times with no luck so far. I hear the coyotes once I start calling they get quiet and after 45 minutes still no dogs. Any advise is appreciated. I need to start clearing some out. We recently had a heifer killed by a few. She was calfing when they got her.

I bet they smell you. How's your scent control? Cover scent? Pick a call and let it play awhile. Ide sit in one spot for atleast 30 min then move a 1/4 of a mile. Watch your wind. Yotes will circle down wind. If hunting at night keep your spot light on and moving. Also watch the volume of your call box. Don't call to loud. Sometimes I like to mix it up and blow a mouth call while usuing the electronic call.

I might need to buy a cover scent to spray on my camo.. I am paying close attention to wind and in order for them to circle me they would have to go through a lot of open pasture and they would be exposed.

Are you night or day hunting? Give me a layout out of where and when you are hunting. A lot of variable come into play. It can be a tricky but fun game

If coyotes start howling while you are calling then you might as well pack it up, as they more than likely have busted you. Don't hesitate to change sounds every 4-5 minutes. I have over 180 sounds on my fox pro and at one time or another have used every sound. If the area you are in has been called before keep mixing and matching your sounds. Hopefully you will play something they have never heard before, or something that will strike their curiosity enough to make them come in. I mix my sounds and volumes up regular and have had lots of success. Also play coyote related calls, challenge howls, hurt pups, wounded coyote, ect... They usually can't resist the sound of one of their own....

We have 150 acres most of ours is open pasture with all the back sides of the land thick in trees for about 100 ft. On the other side of that back fence continues really thick wooded areas. We also are bordered to the south by hundreds of acres that are heavily wooded. I have tried early morning and at sunset. The never have broke out howling while I was calling. They usually get super quiet while I call.

Try it at night in the middle of the pasture. Kill a skunk an stomp on it before u call to get the scent in the air. Best cover scent ever. Start your call low to med range volume wise. Keep the spot light on the whole time scanning 360 degrees while the call is going. If you spot eyes don't put the main beam on it use the lighter halo part of the light. Use scent killer or scent lock clothing. I can't stress scent enough. Any questions pm me if I know the answer I will help ya out.

so when you use a Coyote challenge call you shouldn't expect any howling in return?

I personally don't use challenge/ locator calls. If you have luck with the more power to ya. I've just done my best calling with other critter sounds.

If you are calling a 150 acres more than a couple of times in a short period, they are probably wise to you by now.

If I get to a spot and call and here just 1 dog howling I will challenge him back. More times than not it will answer you and work into shooting range, had this happen lots of times. I don't use coyote locater sounds but have killed lots of coyotes by either howling them in or playing one of their own in distress.

All excellent advice for BrianS... I would suggest trying some of the "combination" sounds on your FoxPro. For example, their coyote and rabbit sound. These are relatively new and perhaps your targeted coyote's have not heard them.

Please let us know if you have any luck with those calf killer's. I have tried the calf distress sound in these situations, but that has not worked for me, at least yet.

I also agree scent control is critical, that will get you busted quicker than other errors.

That coyote looks pretty thin. Congrats.

Hard to imagine that coyote has been living off beef. I would appreciate seeing a video of the coyotes killing your heifer because I have never seen this happen. How many coyotes were there in this attack?

We assume the heifer was laying down when they got her. At the time we found her there were 2 seen. This coyote was very thin but others I have seen are very full. I don't recall seeing a ton of healthy coyotes that have mange this bad.
