Went on my first all day scouting trip and looked at a dozen or so bodies of water ranging from small stock tanks to 40 acre soil conservation lakes. About half were heavily wooded in the area around and some were in wide open fields.

Which do you prefer? What do you like to look for? Didn't see a huge number of sucks at any of them. Most all had been hunted this morning and I purposely went mid day as to not walk in on anyone's hunt.

Sucks are going to be in different places at different times of the day. Sucks go to certain ponds to feed in the morning and then go to other places to loaf. You need to scout in the morning and find where they are feeding. Look for sucks asses sticking up feeding.

When you find hunt able numbers, use good binos to seeing what they are doing and how they're acting. Then set your deeks accordingly.

These guys are right you kind of have to get in line with the birds time clock to really know where they are going to be and when. I have done some mid day and afternoon scouting trips before as well, only to have "crickets" the next morning @ LST...........

This is spot on.... you can find an awsome hole with feathers all over it but if they arnt there while your scouting they have either left out or its a roost.... find the birds

I look for duck feathers. Anywhere ducks spend any amount of time they will preen their feathers leaving behing feathers floating.

Thanks for the help. I was just worried about busting up someone else's hunting by going at first light.

Not a good idea scouting before 12 if you ask me, just look for other hunters if you do, and if you got a mud boat don't do it. Nothing worse than a mud boat driving around all morning while you are trying to hunt. What is even worse is when they see your spread and think they found some ducks. hammer

What I have seen if you find ducks in the afternoon, you will have good shoot in the morning. That is the best time to scout.
