Joined the forum because I'm teed off. First off I'm a gun owner, gun builder, disabled vet and retired cop, I'm familiar with violence. The events of the last few weeks have me sickened. Shootings all over the country, gun owners in a panic, dealers and individuals gouging, politicians spewing forth ever more idiocy. It all makes me nervous where we are headed as a nation. Our government can't balance a budget, feed our hungry or educate our kids. No way they can tackle an issue as complex as gun control with any logic or self control. I've supported the NRA for over 30 years. I've watched them go from an idealogical group of leaders to simply a special interest lobby throwing money at politicians to tow our line. Its almost the only game in town. I believe Wayne Lapierre (sp) showed us as a group of idiots. Instead of offering up some logical legislation (its coming wether we like it or not), some real solutions, he says arm the teachers, put a guard in schools. Lotsa problems with those ideas. Who's going to really train these people? I don't want a person who goes to the range once a year to certify to have to confront an armed threat with my kids as their back stop. Proficiency with a weapon in a situation like that takes constant training and practice. Who's gonna pay for this? I'm for some sensical solutions. Background checks DO NOT indicate anything about a persons mental state either past or present, only criminal activity. Of us CHL holders on here, I'm one who doesn't mind being in that database. It doesn't register my gun or state the amount of what I have. How about a national CHL that includes an extra step of a mental eval? make the CHL a requirement to buy a gun. Make firearms purchases require a 4473: if you're an individual, go to the local PD and fill it out. It won't stop every bad apple but it might help. Logical ideas anyone? We are gonna see changes and I don't recommend compromises, too many lives are at stake to compromise. Come on NRA, show some leadership!
t it might help.

Also, you're post has nothing to do with open hunting discussion. Mods need to move this thread, or just delete it IMO.

there's plenty of gun laws on the book as it stands now .How about inforcing what they have? I don’t want to jump thru any more hoops to simply buy a gun. If a person sees a shrink and the reason deems them UNstabile it should show up on the background check we have now .
Arming teachers is a good idea too me. BUT ! they should have a state training similar to LE or such not just a ccl. As for the payin for it we just tell Pakistan that hates us and hides terriost the check book is closed too them . that'll more than cover it. If that's not enuff there's several other countries that could be cut off the American tax payer tit.
The NRA atleast gave a few days for the families to morn their loved ones before speaking . When the NRA spoke it wasn’t a bunch of ban, ban, ban carp like the gov. and others started spewing before the smoke even cleared in CT.
The 2nd amendment states (SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED) The way I see it and this is just me , the addition of fire arms in the atf is an infringement . The ONLY way to stop shootings is either confiscate ALL guns in the world or kill all but 1 person . Neither of these is an option .
The best option is a better mental health system,no more gun free zones and when it happens again stop makin them bigger than life on all the news . Note I said WHEN it happens not IF cause people kill people and the killed people die. just how it is .
Name me 1 thing the Gov. ever stuck it's dirty little hand in and made it better and I may rethink some of my post but NEVER will I agree with gun restrictions I hold too the 2nd amendment .
MERRY CHRISTMAS
By the way murder is a law already on the books and it dont stop murders so why tie the hands of the lawabiding .

Blackhorse - You sound very upset. I cannot think of anyone who wouldn't be upset after hearing of children being murdered, no matter how. I was upset as well and we didn't turn on the news at our house until the Sunday evening after and then only because we felt the need to tell our middle schooler what had happened.
With respect to the NRA, Wayne's comments are his own but they seem to closely follow the SRO programs so many ISD's and City currently use. Seems like a good idea to me the only concern I have is how to pay for it but since there is nothing more important than keeping our children safe and the government spendsd so much money on useless things, I really don't see money as the problem. There have been 14 studies on gun control. Eleven concluced gun control was totally ineffective and 3 concluded that while homicide rates dropped during the gun control, the drop rate was pre-existing and there was no change in the drop rate. Therefore, I think it's safe to say it doesn't work.
If it doesn't work then why not have armed people at the schools? Personally, I need more information but I'm asking you. Why do you think that your children’s schoolteachers would shoot them? Why do you entrust your precious children to someone you believe would murder them?

mental evals have been floated by Dems as a way to restrict responsible gun ownership, not to protect it.

The NRA should have picked a better speaker, VP of NRA or not.
As far as gouging, I don't think it is. They aren't selling medicine or milk, you don't have to buy it.
I know people who have been "flipping" real estate for years. Sometimes only owning it a few months and clearing a couple hundred grand. Never heard anyone accuse them of gouging. Just a good business move.
Someone posted on here last week a report that mass shootings as a whole are down in our country. Biggest difference now is media and how fast news travels.

Well I hear what all of you are saying. Not trolling or looking for anything but a discussion with fellow gun owners. I don't want anyone telling me what I can own for certain. I have some class 3 stuff and ARs and want to keep them. I was a cop on and off and in the military for 24 yrs and I can tell you that all of PDs I worked for qualify every 6 months with a couple hundred rounds at most...its a joke. SWAT teams train constantly. You're asking a teacher to confort an armed nut....that's not generally going to be the teachers strong skill set. Its an idea but not the best by far. SROs are better. The gun laws are on the books I'm well aware of that, there are going to be changes and I see it as inevitable...we can't just stand and say well this tragedy is terrible but you're not going to take my guns...I'm a veteran, a disabled veteran, 9 tours to the desert...I've shed blood there, my own. Don't any of you accuse me of dishonoring our Constitution. I just think we need to solve this issue ourselves and not let those political "geniuses" do it for us.
