I wanted to let you guys know of a good shooting instructor if you are look'n to be ready for Sept 1!! His name is Gaylen Capps (cell 214-577-2756), he's an NSCA certified shooting instructor level III. He volunteers as an instructor for Dallas County 4H Shotgun Sports, and is just a super guy . I myself have learned so much just from watching him coach the kids. He charges $75 for a 1 hr lesson (you pay for the targets at Elm Fork in Dallas or Alpine in Fort Worth). He also does a 3 lesson package for $200. He will also do group deals, just give him a call. I myself have never had a private lesson, and I’m going to do a 3 lesson package with him. And if you guys want to do a THF group shoot at Elm Fork with Gaylen, post up maybe we can get a THF shoot going!

Just got back from taking my 3rd lesson today from the 3 lesson package I bought, best money I every spent! My shooting has really improved, but most importantly, I just feel educated now about how to shoot right, and I now have the tools to evaluate myself to get better. If you have never had a lesson before from a pro, treat yourself to a 3 lesson package, you will be glad you did.

You mean as far as "fit". Yeah he does, he will let you know if the gun fits you right or not, he told me my gun fits me fine for the level I'm at.

My boss recently took a 3 package lesson from Gaylen and was very pleased. My boss was worried about fit, he wanted to get it check out before going to Gaylen, I told him Gaylen is the perfect person really to tell you if the gun fits ok or not, he was worried about wasting a lesson on that, man Gaylen is not like that at all, you will get your moneys worth him, I can promise you that. Fit is normally not a problem with guys for the average shooter, woman have longer necks and are different story. But my boss had a little cross eye issue, Gaylen originally told him to stop leading, my boss said he wasn’t, so Gaylen tested him and discovered the cross eye issue, then put a little capstick on his left eye glass, then had him hitting targets. My shooting has improved big time this year, I still do not feel completely comfortable with my shooting namely because I’m shooting with a new style, but I have improved big time, and I’m getting better with each shoot. If you are shooting a ton of shells to get your limit, or just frustrated with your wing shooting, treat yourself and take a lesson, you deserve it.

Yeah, a lesson is not a silver bullet, you got to practice. But the lessons will give you the tools so you practice the right things.

I think a lot of times when it comes to paying for a lesson peoples egos get in the way…”I’ve been shooting a shotgun since I was 2, I don’t need no lesson”. Once you swallow that pride and try one out you will learn something no matter how good you think you are. It’s nice to have someone behind you telling you exactly why you missed that clay, I learned a lot of stuff my first lesson that I just never really knew or fully understood.
I did not take a lesson from the guy this thread is about, got mine from Joe Schram here in Austin. Best money I have spent in a long time.

Everyone has their own style...I kinda see it like this... I have been shooting since I was around 6 years old..... Don't think it is an ego thing.....but.....do you ever wonder......how they got good.....and what makes them good, the instructor that is.......it is called practice....practice.....practice.......
Did they take lessons....did they just say.....I have been shooting for a long time.....so i am going to go out and instruct someone.......Just food for thought.......
Time is not wasted if you spend it with the ones you love.

hnh, I dont know anyone in houston, but I bet a local range could get you pointed in the right place.
kwr, your right practice is very important and will make or break your skills. With practice i am consistently in the low 20's on the skeet course, and I am happy with that. the guy I took a few lessons from has multiple world titles and differant gauge catagorys. Just a few months ago he was in a slump and went to some instructor in san antonio that is suppose to be the guru of skeet. This was right before the world shoot and he wanted to make sure is game was A+
an extra set of eyes watching you shoot will always lend some help...in competition style shooting that is

true that....but skeet and trap are different from true hunting conditions......the practice doesn't hurt.....but I am not in shooting to get world titles....I am in it for the fun of the sport.......
I am a cheap Arse mexican....that wouldn't fit into that world......too many dang high expensive shotguns......
Give me a good remington.....and some birds and I am good..
and your last line has it right.......in comp that is....
Time is not wasted if you spend it with the ones you love.

Bobby Fowler Jr is in the Houston area and a great guy. I have not taken his school yet but have spoke several times on phone and net with him and he has been VERY helpful. Our schedules never match up. With me working out of country and teaching rifle and pistol classes I can't seem to get my off time and his to jive. Look him up! Bobby Fowler Jr's Elite Shooting School offers professional shotgun shooting tuition for Sporting Clays, FITASC, Skeet and Trap and 5 stand. www.eliteshooting.com
