My first deer was shot by a slug out of my Grandpa's 12 GA Stevens single shot. At 12 years of age, he bought it from his school teacher for 3 dollars and carried it home from school.
How badass is that- one could pray and have guns at school!

Hi guys, Great topic! I surely love those old school Remington autos - Models 8 and 81. What beauties! Here is my pre-war Model 12 Skeet in 20 gauge. I was going on a little crow hunt (hence my FoxPro Sno Crow Pro 2 custom caller) and this skunk crossed in front of my approach to my crow hide. All the best,

When I was a kid in the 60's, my dad hunted with a German 8mm Mauser that he brought back from WWII. It was the only deer hunting rifle he ever had. After he died, my sister inherited the gun because my brother-in-law used to hunt with my dad. It's still in the family, and my sister's great-grandson just killed his first deer with it. That's 5 generations that have used that gun to bring home venison. I never got to hunt with it, but my memories of it were so strong that I saw one at a gun show a couple of years ago and bought it. My son killed his first deer with it last year. The only deer I've ever killed were with my Winchester 94 .30-06 that my dad bought for me in 1967 when I was 13. I just killed another one with it season before last. I've got quite a few guns that I like to take to the range, but when I hunt with my .30-30 or my grandfather's double barrel 16 gauge shotgun made in 1913, it's like taking my long-dead hunting partners with me.

Still got my ol dad's Colt 22 mag frontiersman, 7x57 Mauser, 11-47 Remmy with polychoke, and some others. I lost him in 74. I think about shooting them with him. Great memories.

I used a savage 99 in 250-3000 to take my hog yesterday. My 22 is a Winchester model 1890 and my shotgun is an H&R over and under that is only 40 yrs old. :-)

I lost my dad in 1997 but almost every deer season since then I have gone to the woods with his old 1903a3 Springfield that I have watched him hunt with from my earliest memories. He paid 60 dollars for it in the early 1960's and put a used K4 Weaver on it. I have seen him kill literally hundreds of deer with that old rifle and made a few impressive shots doing it. A couple of years before he passed, I gave his rifle a makeover by removing the sights, refinishing the stock and trading his K4 for a nice 3x9 Leupold. He was so shocked and surprised by how his old rifle cleaned up and was even more proud of it than he had been before. I cannot look at the rifle without remembering various hunts from the past. To me that is what its all about. That is something a fancy new rifle will never be able to provide.

I have always been a fan of Jack O'Conner. I have a Pre-64 Winchester Mod 70 in .270 that is now a safe queen but I have taken many deer with it over the years. My rifle of choice these days is a Ruger #1 in .22-250.

I like to use grandma's Winchester Model 67 .22. It is the best squirrel and rabbit gun ever. With subsinic shorts all you hear is the fireing pin click and the thump wher it hits. I know she got it in 1945 but don't know when it was made some where in the 1930's.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Great thread.
I love old guns and like to shoot and hunt with them. Wish I had more.
My dad recently died and my youngest brother got the prized Browning Superposed Lightning so I guess I need to save up and buy one just like it.
From my dad I have a 50's model FN Commercial Mauser in .257 Roberts that I have shot several deer and a hog with.
I bought a '65 model Browning High Power in .30-06 that is a modified Mauser action.

The last deer that I shot was taken with my Father's 1954 Winchester 94 30-30. He has been gone now since '07. I wish he could have seen it. Using that rifle to take that little buck is my new favorite hunting experience.

don't have anything super rare or cool per say...but I have a model 700 .243 my grandfather won in a poker game 60 years ago that has been passed down to me. Every member in our family has killed their first deer with that rifle, including my wife. SO it has a lot of sentimental value to us. It's brought out of the safe once or twice a year when my mom decides to hunt. The stock needs to be sanded down and refinished and barrell could probably use a blueing job...but I like her the way she is!
