Take your pup with an older dog that loves to swim to a pond and let them loose. The competition will get them swimming in no time.

You can put some waders on and get in and let him follow, or if he is retrieving already you can toss something to the waters edge and then slowy toss it further out in the water. Another good trick is to get some treats that float and just tease him and toss some treats on the surface. The main thing is to not force it and let him get in on his own which ever way you can.

Water temps are cold right now, keep that in mind.

This and waders. Coax the puppy into the water or carry him out and slowly lower him into the swimming water keeping a hand under the puppy to stabilize it. Let him swim a few strokes, pick him up and praise him and try again. It goes pretty fast. Angie

I introduced my pup to water about 2 months ago when she was 11 weeks old. Tossed a soft bumper in shallow water about 10 feet from the bank and she BOLTED right after it. I was amazed...no coaxing required and she was swimming in deeper water within a few minutes. I guess every pup is different. Definitely dont force it...

toss it in...that's what my parents did to me...I made it... Alright...I was joking...about the dog that is... We started her out in warmer months (March/April if I remember right). Just had her playing around and throwing stuff out a few yards from shore with other dogs involved. She stuttered to begin with. Not sure if it was instinct, peer pressure or what...but after about 15 minutes she was a natural.

I couldn't keep mine out of the water when she was a puppy. I got her right before Christmas, and my wife and I took her to a park that had a small lake. Since no one was around and it was a safe area far from the street we let the pup off her leash, not that it was doing much good at that point, to run around. Lilly (the dog and not my wife) ran down to the water, kind of pawed at it, and then waded out. She paddled around a bit, then ran out...
And forget keeping her out of my parent's pool.

my pup started swiming at around 9wks old... sorta happened by accident... we were at my friends pool and he fell in and i leap in after him and low and behold he was up cruzing around like nothing happened... guess i got lucky on that one... loved water retrieves at that age too... just like being in the water and playing and being a puppy... nothing serious about it...
