I am going to get one tomorrow, because I think they will soon be banned.
I know nothing about these things, but want one just because. The only one I have ever shot was a Rock River 223. I guess that is what I will look for.
I want a 223, what else should I look for in one. This will be the only one I own and will be used mostly just for shooting for fun. Any suggestions?

I know alot of people hate Walmart but they have had some good prices on a few AR's. Colts and Rugers mainly. I would shy away from any Sport model AR because they have no dust cover or forward assist. IMHO
What is your budget?

My only 2 cents is get the 5.56 if you want 223. Having the ability to shoot both makes ammo easier to shoot as it gets harder to come by.

You should be good then. I think the Colt is 1097 and the Ruger is 897. Dont hold me to that. Also I would make sure whichever on has a 1/7 twist barrel.( This is my preference because it can stabilize heavier grain bullets) Im pretty sure the Colt does.

If you were willing to wait for one shipped you could probably get a slightly better deal. But if your dead set on getting one tomorrow I would hit up Wally World. But there are plenty of guys on here that could hook you up with a good deal.

I would go to every wal-mart I could and look for a colt 6920 like others have suggested. It's everything a person should want in a quality "as close to" mil-spec AR as a person can get. And they hold their value better than the rest.

I bought my first one few months back. I was fortunate to listen to the advice of others and bought a Colt 6920.
My advice, go to Cabelas or Bass Pro and handle all the ones your interested in. Then when you find the one you like go home and look on the Internet and buy it. I bought mine from Budsgunshop and saved about $300-400 from Cabelas. Plus I got the Magpul version I wanted that none of them even had. If you want cheaper than Colt check out Windham weaponry at Cabelas. I really liked that one a lot.

Rock River LAR-15 223/5.56 With the help of the Texas Hunting Forum and a buddy of mine, I was finally able to waddle through all the ins and outs of a black rifle and decide on one. I think I am going to be very pleased with this one. Thanks again fella's. Ain't she purty.

Go to Walmart, get the Colt and be done with it! You'll have no regrets.

DCS,
Sweet gun. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it? I only ask because I'm in the market for a black rifle myself. Enjoy yours, sir.

$1163.69 tax, title and license out the door price.
Got it at my favorite little gun shop AJC sports in Clute.
Kind of a weird thing happened while I was in there. Some guy from Mexico was trying to buy one with cash. Couldn't pass the back ground check.... Makes you go Hmmmmm and think of Fast and Furious.

Now comes the expensive part... the upgrades. Dead on. When I bought my first I thought man these people are crazy wanting to upgrade their rifles and not just enjoy it as it is. Now mines all Magpul'd out and I love it. Now I too an one of "those people" lol
