I am buying a remington 788 in 6mm. I have always heard alot about this round but i never owned one. Interested in any info about this round, accuracy, effectve range, etc. I have heard it called a 243 on steroids. Any info, experience, or opinions are appreciated.

I shoot one on a regular basis. It loves 70gr BT's with max load of 4350. It started out as a stock 600 6mm. I had a Shilen #5 contour barrel installed and it really came to life. It has shot everything from prairie dogs to whitetails. Now days I save it for yote thumping.

It's a fun little round I had one but it was labeled as a .244 and wouldn't shoot heavy's very well.

I have owned one since 1972. One of my dads good friends was a gunsmith and he had it built for me. It was my second birthday present.
Mine is a customized mauser, shilen barrel, very nice with custom engraving. Shoots 100gr bullets in a dime at 100 yards. My first whitetail kill was with it, the majority of the whitetails I have killed in my life have been with it. Great rifle, will be my oldest daughters rifle when she is ready to step up to it from her 22-250.
It is a marginally hotter round than a .243. I own both, both are custome mauser by the same gunsmith. I haven't shot the .243 since 1991. I am going hunting next week, I might just have to break the old girl out.

Got a model 600 in 6mm. My favorite rifle. Shoots 70 to 100 grain bullets well. I've killed quite a few deer with it. The 70 to 80 grain bullets seem to work better on Texas sized deer. The 100 grainers seem to leave less of a blood trail on those that run.

I have a older 700 in 6mm and it has been my go to gun for hunting for the last 15 years. I killed many deer coyotes and whatever falls victim to it. Now I will say it holds special powers in my mind because of the shock it causes on whatever it strikes! My loads are hand loads with a 95 grain bt does wonders on light skinned animals.

As far as OTC ammo. Hornady has best selection. I'm not a fan of the remmy corlokts. Hornady SST is a better bullet

I had a 788 in 6mm back in the 80's and early 90's. That little rifle was a total tack-driver. Been kicking myself for selling it ever since. It's just a little more velocity (150 fps) than a .243, but I just like that cartridge for some reason.

My Dad had a Rem. 700 in 6mm back in the 70's. Very accurate. He killed a lot of whitetails and varmints with it. Wish I had it now.

What kind of barrel twist would be best for heavier bullets? Been considering a 243 for my kids for deer hunting and everyone says the 6mm is very accurate.

My first centerfire rifle (early 70s) was a Remmy 700 in 6mm. Very accurate and still in the family. Passed it on to my kid brother. Been shooting a 270 mostly but picked up a nice 788 in 6mm a few months ago. Just upgraded the scope to a Minox 3-15x42 and got some reloads with 80 grain Barnes TTSX. Just haven't had a chance to get to the range with it yet, but confident it will be sub moa.
Tim: Only problem with the 6 mm is that shells are much tougher to find at places like Academy than the 243. But once dialed in, the 100 custom reloads I got should last me until they put me 6 ft under.

They are harder to find and more expensive. I am a reloader so over time I guess it evens out. Sounds like a great deer round.

Love the 6mm it's the new black. David tubb and mark Gardner will agree. Granted bullet construction is key here but a 95 sst is a devestating bullet on wt. would I use it for an elk no, but that's why there really isn't an all in one gun. Many tools for many jobs. I'm really biased though for 6mm and 6.5mm. They offer excellent ballistics and efficeny.

I have a Remington model 722 .244 I bought back in 1957 when I was 13 years old. It's killed well over 100 Hill Country whitetails. It might as well be a single shot as you never need a second round. Blood trail is never an issue as deer simply fold up and fall over when you pull the trigger. I use 85 grain Sierra spitzers and 4895 powder. Sighted in at 25 yards, it's point blank out to around 240 yards. I hunt with a number of rifles, but this one has to be one of favorites -- if only because of the many memories!

It's a fun little round I had one but it was labeled as a .244 and wouldn't shoot heavy's very well. Isn't that the reason Remington canned the "244", worked out the kinks and re-introduced it as a 6mm? I have a Remi 788, Ruger MKI and Remi 700 BDL varmint in 6mm and they all shoot very well with anything I've put in them. As mentioned above, the Hornady 95 grain SST has been my favorite factory ammo for them the last couple years. You definately won't be disappointed in the 788. If you don't like the "plain jane" stock on it, there are tons of upgraded styles available to dress it up a bit!

If you don't reload, you'll want a .243 because of the universal availability of factory loads in many configurations. If you're a reloader, you'll prefer the 6mm Remmy, as it's slightly more powerful than the .243. Also, according to John Barsness and other gunwriters, the 6mm is a little more forgiving than the .243 when you approach high pressures (like the 7mm RM, the .243 can get unpredictable at SAAMI max). And over the years, I've found the 6mm to be slightly more accurate in several guns, along with around 75-100 fps more velocity. With a 6mm out of a Remmy 600 and a 100-gr Nosler Pt, I took my 3rd-best muley several years back out of the Paunsagunt unit.
