This is my first season hunting in South Texas and we have a herd of javelina on our place that are showing up on the trail camera. There are a couple good size boars, but I don't plan on getting them mounted. Is there any reason to shoot them. I am very familiar with hogs and shoot them when I get the chance but are javelina as destructive/nuisance? I hate to shoot something and just leave it lying, but if they cause problems like the hogs I wouldn't mind popping a nice boar.

Also, can you shoot them at night?

I might be uninformed, but I've never heard of Javelinas causing problems.

They are game animals. You can't shoot them at night, can't shoot more then two per yr and you can't discard em.

Javi's are corn rats and run off WT just like hogs. I fence my feeders off so they are not a problem. They are a big game animal so hunting at night would be out of the question I would think.

Thanks for the input! We will end up fencing off our feeder with hog panel to keep them from running the deer off next year. Just wanted to get out there this first season and see what all is roaming around.

Javi's are somewhat of a pain in the butt. They will eat your corn. They will dig under your pen, especially in sandy soil. As pointed out, they are a native wildlife resource and they are regulated by TPWD. Yearly limit is two per person. Can't hunt 'em at night and can't trap 'em like hogs.

They can be a nuisance at times, running off your deer, but still neat animals to have around. They can be tasty, but it depends on the animal.
Make sure you use enough gun to stop a charge! wink
