I remember that it was in the low 20's, with a strong north wind when I walked to the north end of the woods and climbed up into a new metal ladder stand. The seat was contoured to be comfortable, but it had about an inch of solid ice on it. I had on thermals, with yellow rain slicker bottoms over the thermals and under the camo. I could get cold, but at least I wasn't going to get wet. I sat for a few hours in that north wind and was shivering and shaking by the time I decided to leave. My warm butt had melted the ice and it had refrozen and I was stuck. Took me 10 minutes with my Kbar to chip my backside out of the metal seat. I'm much smarter than that now, having box blinds and heaters.

Screw that. I don't think I'm cut out for any colder than 15 degrees (late December a few years back, Concho county). Heck, it was 24 this morning, and my toes were killing me (two pairs of socks, one regular cotton followed up with heavy merino wool). Saw quite a few deer though. I'll be doing it again tomorrow morning. Toes will be hurting again. Maybe I should invest in some insulated boots...

I've been ou on a couple of teen mornings, but the worst was 37. I was Ina tree 17 feet up, when the cold front hit. North wind blew up but the worst part was the half inch of rain that fell in about fifteen minutes. This was before the weather channel and we had no idea it was coming. So I was soaked to the bone in the screaming wind. It was already in the 20s when we got back to the house.

Duck Hunting in 6 degrees a few years back on the Trinity River bottom.

Between White Sulfur Springs and Grand Falls MT. On the 6th day of the hunt it finally got to the high for the week of +5 degrees, the only day of a 7 day stretch it got above 0. Lowest I saw was -21 but highs were about -5 most days of the hunt. highest winds that week were about 30 mph but most days it was between 10 and 20, cold but still a fun hunt. We hunted some from the truck but also spent up to 5 hours out at a time away from the trucks. Cold but would be glad to do it again, with good cloths it wasn't that bad.

I have never used a heater. Kinda hard to make a difference when you are bow hunting in a tripod.

I'm convinced some of you need to see a shrink.
I recently bought one of those wireless weather stations for my trailer that measures the outside temperature and wind speed and calculates the wind chill. Should I ever find it reading less than 20 degrees, I'm crawling back into bed.

Back in 2004, hunted late December outside of Christoval. 5:00 am temp was 10 degrees with a -1 windchill w/light snow and heavy ice. 10:00 am Temp was 3 degrees no wind and really heavy ice four days of that in a row with nothing but insulated bibs and a jacket.

13 degrees. Far North Oklahoma. Slept in a tent, hunted out of a climber. For 3 days, the high never broke the freezing mark. Not too long after that, I bought my Mr Buddy heater. Saw a lot of deer those 3 days.

About 30 years ago! Near 0 & 18 to 24 inches of snow on the ground and a 15 - 20 mph wind blowing at you. We were near Ridgeway CO. That was the year I had to do some real soul searching about what was fun about hunting. Got snowed in up there twice - never hunted the late season again!

I almost forgot about 1983 when the whole north end of Lavon froze over. 10 days below 32. You could not get a boat in so I just broke a hole in the ice and bank hunted. The morning I hunted it was in the single digits. I would shoot a duck and it would land on the other side of the hole. My golden ret. would go through the open water to get the duck rather than walk around. I finally felt sorry for her and left. Got home and when her tail hit the wall in the house it sounded like glass breaking. This was the same year I fell out of the boat reaching for a deke. Ride back to ramp was not fun. It took 2 days for my body to warm up.

Manistique Michigan, Dember 2007. Air temp of 0 and 20 mph winds. box blind but no heater, just a whole bunch of pocket hand and foot warmers! Do you know how hard it is to eat a solid frozen Snickers and wash it down with a slushy Mountain Dew? Ended up putting my soda inside my jacket.

9 deg blowing snow just outside of liberal kansas on a muledeer hunt, we were stalking so on the move, but it was brutal trying to walk into the wind and the jacket i had on had a hood and kept funneling snow and wind down my back, conditions were not fun, but one of the best hunts i have ever had in my life!

Early 90's outside of Winters, Tx. I pulled my bottle of water out of my pack and noticed it was carbonated water..oh well. Cracked the cap and it froze right before my eyes! Still don't use a heater and almost never hunt in a blind.

Low 20's in Pennsylvania with a steady wind out of the north about 25 mph. After 3 hours I was so cold it was all I could think about.
