Just found out that I will be hunting on 560 acres in Concho County this year. The property is located south of Paint Rock. Any ideas as to what to expect when it comes to the size and numbers of deer in the area.
Any other useful tips/info would be welcome.
Thanks

You should see plenty of animals. They might not be the biggest free ranging deer but should have some prospects

Well, I have hunted in Mason county for most of the last 30 years, and those aren't the biggest deer in the world. I am expecting bigger in the new place. Maybe not as many as I am used to, but bigger.

You will see lots of deer unless there is a bunch of day leasing around you!
There should be lots of nice 8 points running around with the upper end deer topping out in the 140" catagory! There are bigger deer than that killed every year in that area, I am just saying that I would not expect bigger than that, and odds are you wont get one that big anyway!
Still a good area, just not a "go to" area for trophy bucks!
Try to stay away from the goats as much as possible too!!

We had the Mason lease in our family for 50 years before we lost it this year. In that 50 years the biggest deer ever was a 134" 10 pt. So, a 140" 8 pt. would be great.
We will own the Concho County place and there will be no goats or cattle on it.

Dont get me wrong....I am not saying that you are going to kill a 140" deer, I am just saying that a 140" deer is the top end of what you should expect for that area! Odds are you wont find one that big, but if you do you should not hesitate to blast him!!
Good luck with your ranch, and the fact that you dont plan to run livestock on it will improve the range conditions a ton!

Put food/corn/supliments out now. Insure they will be there come season.

Leased two places for three years near Eola on the Kickapoo Creek. Shot one deer 9 point 5.5yrs old 135bc. I saw a few more each year that were that big or bigger just to young. Was never a big deal to see 10 plus at each stand, with over 50 plus in the wheat fields. Some of the best quail hunting on a 200 acre tract that had no cows or goats. The other tract 400 acres had cows and had fewer quail and fewer deer.

That area may not have the biggest & baddest bucks around but to fill your freezer, you cant beat it. There are some good bucks out there, dont get me wrong.

My uncle and I have a place on OH Ivey. There are so many deer it’s ridicules. I can have 20+ deer at the feeder at any given time. Get a good management plan and you can have some nice bucks. Fill all your doe tags. Our neighbor has 3 - 4 130"+ bucks he has shot over the past few years. Good luck

Oh yea the "lake ivie deer" are numerous. They are like "mini-deer" in some places due to the numbers & competiton for food, just check out Concho Park Marina, they are EVERYWHERE. But if you lessen the doe by ALOT & manage the bucks, in a few years there should be some good ones.
