With rising corn prices I am doing research on feeding protein year around, although I know it is a little late this year. What brands do you guys use? What prices are they?

Antler Max....but its more expensive than corn! Paid 11.75 for 50# and 9.75 for 50# corn 6/30! I am going to find a couple huge oak trees and dump about 3 bags of 15-15-15 around the base! Let the acorns do the work!

I get mine from Bodies in Harper. Its $10+ a bag right now. If you are thinking about putting it in a spin cast feeder I think you will be disappointed. Protein pellets have a tendency to soak up water. They will would great for a while and then clog up your feeder. If you are not going free choice I would just stick to corn.

What kind are you using? By free choice do you mean having the gravity tube? I have one setup, just trying to decide on which brand to go with...I dont mind spending 10-13 dollars a bag...

yea free choice is going to be through a gravity tube. you can't really go wrong with protein. i'd say just get it out for them to eat asap. some people will say that it'll take 3 years to see the full benefit of protein but youll probably notice a difference after one year of continuous feeding

Yep that was what I was meaning. I am all for feeding protein. I am headed to the hill country this weekend to fill up the protein feeder again. We have 4 on the place. My buddy and I share one that is 2000 pounds. Currently they are eating about 250 pounds a week. While that cost some money I have to say it has been worth it. In the 3 years that we have been on the lease we have seen a significant improvement in the bucks.

I have had really good luck with Antlermax also. My son shot a good 9pt. buck last year that weighed 175 and field dressed 150. All of our deer seem to be larger than they were a few years ago when we were not feeding protein.

Just switched from Antler Max to West Feeds 20% Deer Pellets...$9.25 a bag. Golden Deer Nuggets...$9.15 a bag. I was recently at the local feed store and saw a new product. The feed store has the local Cargill Nutrena plant mixing a 10% All-Purpose Pellet at $6.30 a bag. The bag says it can be fed to multiple species listing: cattle, swine, goats and horses but does not list deer. I compared the ingredients and it contains basically the same products as the 20% deer pellets I'm currently feeding. I understand it is not as high in protein as the other feed and the deer will eat more but is there anything livestock can eat that deer can't?
