Is the bolt action of a WW2 Japanese Arisaka rifle hard or nearly impossible to open or close?

I have one, and yes, on mine at least, you have to slam the bolt forward to get it to close, even after I cleaned and oiled it.
The gun is beat to hell, though.
FYI ammo to go (online) has the jap ammunition made by Norma.
$40 for 20 rounds, though I still have never shot the gun. Guy I got it from says it kicks pretty hard-- is this true? (if you've shot yours?)

I handled and shot my great-aunt's and it was a smooth as any other military bolt. A little rougher finished than a Mauser. But, her's was a very early type 99, so maybe it was better built than the later, last-ditch ones.

It cocks on closing. Are you talking had with a shell in the chamber? Is the bolt clean? Coud be a mis matched bolt.

Bolt could also be incorrectly assembled. It is possible to put the safety knob in incorrectly and bind the action. Ask me how I know...

An Arisaka is a modified Mauser action, they're as slick and fast as anything else.
If it was a late-war 1945 build, yes, I would NOT shoot it.
If it looks like it was put together by a committee of drunken Russians, it's a wallhanger.
That said, a non-late-war Arisaka is strong and accurate as anything else.
