Do the coastal guys shoot many Canvasbacks down on the coast? I'm thinking about adding some Canvasbacks or Redheads to my spread but I'm leaning toward the Canvasbacks because of their visibility (aka they are white)

Redheads are a dime a dozen on the coast. Cans are a little less uncommon but they get pretty thick after a big cold front.

Never seen a can in all of my bay hunts. Same here. I grew up hunting the salt marsh around rockport and Port A and have seen and missed one in all my years. Redheads are the first two birds of the morning just about every trip.

Saw one group of about 30 on my first bat hunt earlier this year in east matty. Not sure how common that is. Had about a dozen canvasback decoys in the spread, but they weren't having any of it.

On a side note, I feel like there are more cans this year. Went on two hunts with my dad in OK over thanksgiving, and we had opportunities at canvasbacks on each hunt, twice the first day. Never seen a canvasback in those places.

I've only bagged one can on the coast, but you have a good theory with the better visibility with canvasback decoys, and wouldn't hurt. Those may work great for other divers with a lot of white like the bluebill and bufflehead and could bring in all types from far away.
I have noticed that redheads really suck into my GHG redheads, and recommend those if you are targeting divers on the coast.
Overall, don't over think it. Divers on the coast aren't picky about decoys.
