Who here smokes in their stand? I do it every now and then and have killed several deer while smoking. I have a buddy who has killed monsters within 50 yards of his stand while smoking. What are y'all's opinions on the topic, other than smoking isn't good for? My buddy gives me hell every time I light one, telling me I'm not going to see a thing.

I think as long as you don't smell like a "human", you're okay. I'm sure deer are use to all kinds of smoke....from campfires, fireplaces, leaf and trash burning.

Hunt the wind and it doesn't matter. Don't hunt the wind and it the smell of smoke still doesn't matter. Deer will smell you or smell the smoke...either way you are screwed if they go downwind.

My thoughts exactly. Once they get down wind you're busted. You see it all the time on the hunting shows. They wear their high dollar scent locking clothes and spray down with all sorts of scent blockers and odor eliminators and as soon as a deer gets down wind the're busted.

Like txshntr said, if you're hunting the wind, it don't matter what you do.

You cannot fool the olfactory sense of the White-tailed deer no matter how hard you try. That being said, I have never had cigarette smoke bother a deer. It's usually the human smell that spooks them.

Best advice: Leave your smokes at home and enjoy your weekend and the fresh air at the lease.

My dad has always smoked in the stand. He always sees and kills deer. He doesn't hunt the wind either because he doesn't care enough. He is just killing time waiting to fish.

I have a blind that is only about 60 yards from a feeder. I was there once waiting for pigs and had several does and a couple of young bucks at the feeder. The wind was blowing directly from me to them.
I lit a cig and could almost see the smoke getting to them. They very clearly smelled it and very clearly didn't care at all. They'd stop and smell the air, and look my way, and then go back to eating.

I am not a smoker, but one of the best bucks I ever took was after sitting in a smokey bar for several hours, then going to my tripod wearing blue denim. I laugh at those "hunters" wearing $500 worth of cammo, with a hunter orange vest on and sitting in a box blind....some people believe all they see on TV hunting shows and magazines.

I pay good money for my lease and I hunt the way I want. may sit in blind and drink beer, stay at camp and sleep in, I have killed enough deer in my life anyway.

Depends on the experience and wariness of the deer. I've seen plenty of bucks that weren't bothered by cigarette smoke, but I never saw any of the ones who were......think about it!

If you really want to kill a big deer, why chance it?
If the wind is in your favor you can do whatever you want.
If the wind is blowing directly at the deer, nothing you do will stop them from smelling you. How each deer reacts varies. A big mature doe isn't going to stand for it. A yearling may not notice you are a threat.

Skunk scent will fool a deers nose! It overtakes their olfactory system and it is all that can be smelled. I love skunk cover scent

My grandpa smoked, drank and never wore camo, ever. He always got a deer. 90% he just would sit next to a tree and I don't remember him ever having a nice deer stand.

If you want some friendly advice, get a haircut and take a bath. You wouldn't get hassled so much.
