My dad and I have the opportunity to lease 6000 acres in Crane county next year for real cheap approx. 30 miles southwest of Odessa. We've never hunted near there and didn't know what to expect as far as game numbers (mule vs whitetail), terrain, and if there were any exotics. We've hunted northwest Texas and panhandle mule country but figured this would be completely different. No one has ever hunted it, my friend's family owns it and does nothing with it. Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure, just found out about it a couple days ago, looks like a significant river bed runs through it from google earth, not sure if it holds water year round though.

If you have water or can provide water you will have deer. I grew up in Odessa and personally know there have been some BIG deer shot down that way. You may not see huge numbers but there have been some big, big whitetail shot between Odessa and Crane, and in the surrounding area.

I believe the river you are talking about is the Pecos...and yeah it will have water year round.

I work in Crane, there are nice deer in area, mule deer as well, one of the biggest mule deer I,ve seen was 5 miles west of crane last december standing in barditch. Not a bad area there are dry creek beds in that area, Pecos river is going to be more south of you. Most cattle ranches in this area have water troughs throughout them to supply water.

Thanks for the update, sounds encouraging especially on the mule deer. That's what I'm more interested in anyway.

I grew up in Crane. You may or may not have land with water as the Pecos dries up in certain areas south of town. Mulies are huge in the area and there are white tail. If you like to dove hunt, I have always had great luck there. Be ready to have some patience- it really is a hit or miss! Good luck
