Checked my camera today after a week off from hunting and found this buck from last night. Goofy looking rack and a huge body. Twice as heavy as any other deer I've see. On camera. Funny thing is I hunt about 10 miles south east of the Abilene Airport. I thought it might be a mule deer. Any thoughts??

I'm certainly no expert but that does resemble a mulie to me. The way the rack is and the tail. I'm sure someone who knows more than I will give you a better idea but it certainly looks like one to me.

2nd picture looks like he is revving up his glands. That might tell you what he is doing down there, chasing the women.

I have heard that there is a small population of mule deer in Southern Callahan County South of HWY 36 and West of HWY 83. That probably wouldn't be more than 10 or 15 miles from where you are. I think this was discussed on the forum a year or 2 ago.

there was a huge population of mule deer around Dodge City, Ks. before the drougth, don't know what its like now. I don't see any reason they wouldn't move that area.

There are mule deer by lake Coleman North of Coleman up Hwy 283 like your going to Baird. Cool hands BIL has a ranch up there and gets pics of them from time to time, and I've seen them before there too.

We've have good luck on our place its just tough hunting. You may see 10 total deer in a month but one may be a 140" buck. You just never know. Shot several bobcats and coyotes. Even saw a mountain lion but couldn't get a shot off. More dove and ducks than you could buy shotgun shells to shoot at. Pigs haven't been back on our place in 3 years now.
I was curious about the season thing. So since TPWD doesn't recognize this area as mule deer country if that one or a bigger buck walked out I couldn't shoot it?

I was curious about the season thing. So since TPWD doesn't recognize this area as mule deer country if that one or a bigger buck walked out I couldn't shoot it? NO! Not unless you can pay for a big ticket. But talk to your TPWD biologist and ask them to consider opening a season as the population expands to your region.

Sucks.... We have a season just north of you in Fisher, but we haven't seen one in about 5 years.
