Anyone have any experience with the new Fords? I was thinking of buying one of the new ecoboost FX4 trucks. I pull a 12' trailer with my 2 four wheelers is all. Will that truck handle it? Will it destroy the mileage? Is it a dependable truck? i have an fx4 ecoboost, you wont be dissapointed its a different power feel than the silverado/sierra, ram, tundra, titan, etc. the ecoboost makes the majority of its torque at 1,100 rpms. in other words you can cruise in 6th gear at 1,750rpms at 70mph pulling a trailer or not. with the competitions naturally aspirated engines, they have to be at a higher rpm to have the same torque, which means worse fuel mileage and they will be in 4th or 5th gear at 3,000rpms cruising at 70mph. in half ton there is no comparison, not trying to sound arrogant, its just true.

If you want gas milage get a car gezzzzzzz lol i drove the ecoboost and wasnt impressed at all. Ill keep my z71s or V8 and diesels all day long. I dont keep trucks stock so fuel milage wont matter i like big tires and wheels on all mine and a maybe im old fashioned but a V6 shouldnt be in a truck even if its faster. If i want fast ill get a vette the ecoboost makes 100ft/lbs MORE torque than a z71. It also makes that torque through 90% of the rpm band where the z71 ONLY makes that much torque at certain rpms for a small window of time. when it comes to pulling power, you load up two 10,000lbs trailers and hook one up to a z71 and the other to an ecoboost and let them drag race, the ecoboost pulls the 10,000lbs trailer almost like its not even there..... the z71 huffs and puffs and slowly gets up to speed...... so in real world driving, the ecoboost is easier to pull trailers and briefly gets up to speed, the z71 on the other hand is working to do the same.

Well, guys, I have a 2011 EcoBoost F150 with 15K miles so far and I have to say that it lives up to the Ford hype. 18mpg city and up to 22 highway with more power than I've ever had in any V8. Towing our 29 ft. travel trailer of about 8000 lbs. between DFW area and the lease NW of Abilene my mpg drops to about 8 mpg.....much lower than I had expected, but this is a tall trailer with a bunch of wind drag to it. It also has the most comfortable ride of any truck I've ever ridden in and as good/better than most autos. We drove it to the Pacific NorthWest last summer and, with the exception of the Recaro seats that were in SWMBO's BMW, it's the best over the road ride I've had. Having said all that, the jury is still out on the twin turbo package for long-term reliability.

Just curious about something on the newfangled Ford Ecoboost; What's the highest mileage anyone has seen put on one of these power plants so far? Are they faithfully living well into the 200k+ range?

I have about 8k on mine and seem to be getting around 18-19 MPG on the highway trips. Good engine and lots of power when you get on it.

you'll have to use good quality oil and filters to get a turbo to last. and service the cooling system religiously.

I had a 2011 Lariat 4x4 fully loaded Eco Boost. Had to have the left side cats replaced 3 times by the dealer. I was getting an average 14mpg until the third time they replaced the cats. Then they put on some shield and did an update to the truck and I started to get around 17mpg. I really liked the power but it was not dependable until the third repair. Then I only drove it for about a month before I traded it. Pulling my 20 ft pontoon boat if I drove gently I could stay around 12mpg. If I drove over 55 and got on the gas I was seeing 7-9mpg. Hopefully they have the bugs worked out in the new models. If they do I would think about buying another one.

We have been using a EcoBoost to drive all over the place. Now before anyone gets on our case about being supported by Ford on the show, we looked for two years before we decided to go with Ford. We are sponsored by Southwest Auto Group, or better known as Southwest Ford in Weatherford Texas.
Now for the EcoBoost. We never travel with less than 1000 pounds of stuff anywhere we go, our truck has a camper shell on it as well. When not pulling a trailer we get up to 21 MPG on good level ground like deep south Texas or the Texas Panhandle, or Kansas, and in New Mexico we got 28 MPG at 6500 feet, and Colorado we may have well as been driving a Hybrid vehicle.
The gas milage is better than any vehicle other than the 1973 Datsun pickup I used to own.. Now when we went to the Panhandle to film a prairie dog hunt and scout for Pronghorn we pulled a 22' trailer that weighed in at 2000 pounds by itself and then added another 5000 pounds or more of ATV's to the trailer. The manual transmission option is a big plus when pulling heavy loads. During this trip on the way up we got on average 11 MPG, and coming back we got average 14 mpg.. The truck never missed a beat and had plenty of power to merge into traffic even pulling the load.
So if you are teetering on to or not to buy one we would say you will not be disappointed with the truck or its performance.
Also if you go to Southwest ford and tell them Hunt Wicked Close sent you, they will give you the Hunt Wicked Close Discount and throw in a free spray in bed liner..
Hope this helps and good luck with your new vehicle what ever the make is..

All you have to do is drive one. There is nothing out there to compare it to. I know 5 guys that went from 3/4 tons to the F150 ecoboost and just rave about them. I have put quite a few miles on my father inlaws and my good buddies both towing and unloaded. They are awesome.

I have 7,700 miles on my 2012 and traded a Z71 in on it. There is no comparison. The Ecoboost is like driving a diesel more than a gas, in that the torque it produces at low RPMs allows you to maintain 70-75 MPH without the transmission downshifting. I pull a 19 foot Ranger Bass Boat and can run 75 up and down hills and it almost never drops out of 6th gear, even with the cruise set. Made a trip to Rockport in the summer with a buddy that has the exact same truck with a 5.0 and running 80 I got 19.8 MPG and he got 17.3 MPG. If I was going to pull something all the time with it I would get the 3.73 rear end just to give it a little more pulling power but I haven't seen the need personally.

2011 FX4 (EcoBoost) 3:73 gears & max tow package! Worst I've got is about 7 pulling 9000 lb GVW 35' loaded travel trailer from Azle to Antelope via Jacksboro. It's a hilly drive on mostly 2 lane roads and the headwind that day was 20-25mph gusting to 35 and I was running between 70 - 75 mph just for the info. Normally I only pull at around 62-65 with that trailer. Best so far is about 20mpg with 16.5 to 18 just running around in town. Get about 15.5 to 16.5 pulling a small trailer with a 4 wheeler on it running about 70. The torque curve is almost flat at 420ft lbs starting around 2000 rpm and runs 420 all the way to red line at around 5800 rpm. HP is about 365 at 4500. Keep your foot out of the turbo and the mileage will surprize you. Not a bad little motor for mid range pulling. If I were going to go to heavier loads and pull more often I might have considered a diesel, but we only pull 6 or 7 times a year. The only thing I've done is add a set of Firestone Ride Rite Air bags to the rear suspension. (edit to add 31,500 miles) Hope this helps....Good Luck

I have a 2012 Ford Platinum 4X4. It has just under 20k miles. Haven't gotten over 15.5 mpg. Never pulled anything either.

Do not overlook the 5.0 I have managed 17mpg towing my 17' fiberglass boat. Ok I did not exceed 60 mph, but that is the price you pay. Typically I get 14-15 towing at speed.

There is no comparison in towing though and the eco gets better mileage if you baby the throttle. I have never driven a truck that was so sensitive regarding the throttle and fuel mileage. If you keep the screen on the fuel economy it is very transparent how to get better fuel mileage. It is just hard to drive one that way when you have all that torque and power at your disposal

I just bought a Ecoboost 4x4 last Thursday. I wouldn't want another small block V8 after having this. It will scoot and pulls great. I get the same mileage I was in my Silverado it replaced.
