I'm watching some hunting shows while I should be doing something productive, but anyway the deer are laying there after the shot and people walk up and poke em with their gun to see if they are alive. Not sure what their plan would be if they did jump up and run. Ive seen Pigman do it with a bow on hogs, I seriously doubt if a hog jumped up and ran he could draw and get a good shot on it anyway but hey if it makes em feel safer go ahead I just never understood it. So who pokes their deer?

well i was afraid to open the topic because of the topic intro.....haha....I always jab them on the but, or close to the eye even with my barrel, or push their butt with my foot. I dotn want to get on the ground and have a deer try to get up and run over me.....

Funny story... I shot a buck last weekend thought he was dead walked up and grabbed his antlers...he was still a live and not happy.......oops.

High shoulder shot he wasn't going any where... so grabbed him again put a 380 in base of his skull.

I think ill go back to poke method...shock oh sh** factor isn't as fun as the buck fever part

I always poke or kick 'em. Just to make sure there is no surprise when you get ftf with a supposedly dead animal. I have to agree with BOBO no fun whatsoever!!

Always ethier tap there eye with the muzzle or poke a ham with the muzzel. Had doe jump up a few years ago when i poked her out of reflex i hip shot her in the starfish at about 8 ft with a 270 Nasty

I do! ....and I don't ever walk up to 'em from the front or the feet.

Touch the eye. That is the only real way to tell if dead or not.

I approach from behind and just watch for a min or two before grabbing them, you never know.

I only poke the Does in the butt tho! So Im not gay or anything!

nah for real tho, Ive poked every animal Ive killed to make sure there dead had a racoon play possum on me once scared the mud butt out of me.

This is why you poke them in the butt. If they get up, they're going to run the way they're facing-AWAY FROM YOU!

Know a couple that he shot a deer on opening morning and tagged it before the buck came to life and ran off. His wife shot the tagged deer the next day.

Had a friend years ago that shot a buck that was still breathing when he got to him. He bent over it from the back to cut its' throat and it stood up under him and took him for a little ride. He's about 6'7" 250 lbs. and ended up almost 1/2 mi. from where he started. He's a poker now.

I was taught and always do poke them in the eye.

I always walk up behind them also and will stop bout ten yrds away and watch for them to breath first...never can be to carefull.... walked up to a buck one time that had been down for a while and not moved...when i started gettin close he started raking his antlers on the ground and was pissssed

Yep, as a kid I had a "dead" one get back up while I was dragging it out to a clear spot to gut it. Shoulder shot with a 30-30. Now I usually wait at least 15 minutes before I approach a deer that I've shot.

Thought this was gunna be a thread about the good ole Texas heartshot.

I usually stop 5 yards away from the rear and toss a rock or a stick at them before touching the eyes with my gun barrel.

My brother shot a buck with a 308 several years ago when he rifle hunted, poked the deer in the eye nothin, put him in the truck and and was headed home when the deer jumped out of the truck and ran into the woods. It only made it in about 20yds and he shot it again. Gotta watch out for those zombie deer.
