For hunting, target shooting? Rimfire, or centerfire? I'm a fan of the remington 700 and the ADL can be had new for under $400.

Any opinions on the best rifle on the market for under $400? Might just be the Ruger American. Larry Weishuhn sure likes it, both in print and privately.

I was impressed with the savage axis I borrowed in 308.
I bought a Mossberg ATR in 270. I was a little more impressed with it in the store.

In that price range, I have a .243 Rem 700 ADL, .22 Mag Savage, & .308 Weatherby Vanguard.
Stock, I like the Savage Accutrigger best, Weatherby 2nd & I threw the Remington trigger away & put a good one in it.
I like the feel of the Weatherby action best, Savage 2nd, & can do without the Remington ADL action.
I would love to have another Remington 700 - but NEVER another ADL. If others like theirs, I may have bought a bad one. Out of the box, it is the worst rifle I've ever handled. With my mods, it is my favorite of the three (but far from my favorite rifle).
They all can shoot MOA or better.

JM Brown, I bought a Stevens 200 in .270win since academy was closing them out and figured i would give it a try. I have done nothing to the gun except put a bushnell scope on it and run Hornady custom 130gr through it, and it is a more accurate gun than my custom winchester M70 XTR. If i do my part, i can cover three shots with a quarter at 100yds, done it several times. I bought the gun thinking it would be a backup, it is now my primary deer/hog rifle, it shoots great, even with the less than stellar factory trigger. you can pick up a used stevens 200 for $300 bucks easy and they are shooters for sure!

Mosin! For $400.00 you could have rifle, scope, bolt mod, can of ammo and still punch thru an engine block...at 500 yards.
But yeah, there are easier ways to do it as suggested above.

Have Savage, Remington and Vanguard, all three can be purchased new from a dealer under $400 and then if you consider used you can expand. Marlin & Winchester levers can be bought around $300, and you can get a good super clean Remington 742 semi under $400.

No luck finding a Stevens 200 around here. What model savage do you recommend?

I went through this issue , go with the Remington 700 or Ruger American , don't waste your money on the Mossberg ATR or Savage Axis , some say the Remington 770 is hit or miss also Never buy a new rifle with a cheap scope

My Mossberg came with a scope. No name, but it is decent for the first year. It is way better than what came on my buddies Rem 700 varmint.
The issue is most cost effective guns are being sold as a package. I know I will replace it but it didnt cost anything extra.

I bought a Ruger American 30.06 earlier this year and am extremely impressed with everything about it. Over the years I've owned a number of rifles, several high end models, and I honestly will put this Ruger up against any of them. Simply put, it is my all time favorite rifle.

I second the Ruger American! Bought one in .243 on Black Friday at Wal-Mart and have been nothing but impressed! Shoots Sub-MOA with the cheap 100gr Core-Loks I buy at work! Just have a cheap Bushnell 3-9x40 on it. Thinking about a Nikon 3-9x40 with BDC. Need to work up some loads for it v

If you can find an Old Win 22 SS w/ the button on the bolt and a 24in or longer bbl, should be able to obtain for around $60 to $100..DD

i'm amazed no one suggested the H&R/NEF Handi Rifle series. Can be had in many calibers, granted, it's a single shot, but accurate enough for what you are needing. And one shot tends to make you be a little more careful when doing things and making the shot count.
In God we trust, all others get run through TCIC. Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Lack of Planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
