I wanted to wait until after deer season to start trapping hogs but with what I have goiing on, I don't think I can wait any longer
I have tried to pattern them but to no avail
If the trail cam shows them coming in at 6am for 4 nights a week, I go out and wait and they don't show.
It has been cat and mouse for months now.
I have sat in the blind with my son and 2 ARs just waiting for a chance to blow them away but I realize that I have to take action today.

I think the hogs are starting to dictate when and where the deer are moving.

I bought this place in the spring and didn't see pigs that much until about 3 months ago.
We also had plenty of deer hanging around until the pigs started coming more often

trapping starts next week.

If you want the biggest bang for your buck, get some t-post and stake those feeder legs down. Then buld a large 20-30 diameter circle trap out of cattle panel around that feeder, with two cattle panels coming together like a V. Leave door open a couple nights till you know they are going in then set the trap. More hogs can keep pushing in all night, and the deer can still jump in and out. Good luck

I bent several t-post trying to drive them in where the feeder sits.
I tried with a tractor to drive them.
too rocky.
I love the idea of using panels and t-post for hog traps, it is just not doable

Man that sucks. Personal experience if you stick a box trap next to a feeder, you are only going to catch a handful if that and the remaining ones in the group will only become trap savvy

i don't have to deal with rock but i like to brain storm. would using a 1 inch bit and a hammer drill with generator then drive 1 inch rebar to hold the fencing work? my other ideal would be to use drill stem (heavy) to frame the fencing panels and then bolt/wire it together around the feeder. would the weight of the drill stem and fence help keep them in without using T-posts?

I really don't know. I never thought of using a hammer drill
I have a generator already, I don't think it's solid rock, but it's darn near impossible to get a t-post into to the ground.. like I mentioned, I bent 3 of them trying to drive them in with the bucket on a tractor
I also think that maybe if I could keep it from bending, it might break through. Maybe use a 4" pipe as a sleave?

The sleave might be a darn good idea. I would think rebar would have to much flex with a 200-300 lb boar rammin it. The only problem will be, eventually they will get trap savvy and you will have to move it. Could be a pain in the rear. If you have the financing, time, and a welder. Just use angle iron and build a frame around the panels. Then use the sectioning gate hinges to link them together. Lot of work, but makes it very mobile

I would do the panel trap, bait it for weeks in the open position, maybe a bunch of panels out and add them over time to get used to it, then leave one opening for a gate or maybe a figure six and then once they get used to it set the trap, only way your going to get more than the little ones

Instead of spending a ton of money on a trap, if you ever figure out how to drive a tpost out there, have you considered just fencing off your feeders? I got tired of messing with the traps on our place, fenced off all of our feed pens, and now we have very few hog issues. Don't get me wrong...we still have hogs, but they don't tend to hang around nearly as much as they did prior to fencing off. The 8-10 hog panels in a cirlce discussed in other threads worked great for us and I haven't had an issue yet in 2+ years. Just a thought

how big of an area do you have to fence off around your feeders where the deer will feel confortable enough to stand in there and eat?

4 hog panels would cost $80 plus about 8-10 t post

I'm just trying to work it out in my head.
I guess if I took my tamping iron, I might could use alot of elbow grease and get some post in the ground

I read somewhere once that a pen had to be a minimum of 32 feet in diameter for a deer to be comfortable jumping into it. I had a friend that had a hog pen about 20 feet in diameter and I didn't get a single photo of a deer in there for the 2 years I had a camera there.

Think it was around 40 ft at its widest, notice the weak feeder without tpost

I have been using 8-10 hog panels in a circle overlapping them about a foot on each side and the deer don't seem to have any issues at all about getting in the pen. Even with a corn feeder and free choice feeder in there, I get pics of multiple deer at a time. I haven't setup a photobucket account or I would put up a pic of the size.

That would be a good number EastTexun....10 panels overlapped would give you almost a 45 foot diameter. That is a good size pen.

This is an idea of how big mine are. My wife would kill me if she saw this, but its for the betterment of hunters everywhere..




Hopefully these will give you a little perspective of the size.
