If I had the chance to hand pick a deer to shoot, it would be a dark heavy horned mature buck. Somehow I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time when this bruiser made the mistake of showing himself in Hall County late Sunday afternoon. I only had a short time to make a decision on this deer and thought he was a good mature 8 point. Shooter buck! Let's do this. He is walking right at me and then suddenly turns North - away from the feeder. I thought, it's now or never...he took about 3 more steps and I let the .270 rip at 140yds out. He dropped where he stood and here we are. Turns out he was a heavy 10, not 8. 39 in of mass and he taped out at 160 1/8. Aged him at 5.5 - 6.5 years old. Enjoy!

Funny you mention the kids. I love watching the joy of the kids in the outdoors as much as I do anything in life. I actually had both boys (13 and 10) with me on this hunt. We were hunting for my older son but very long hours on stand the previous couple days had caught up and both were in a deep sleep when this deer walked out. I decided to let them sleep and quietly squeezed one off instead of waking my older and asking him to shoot a deer of a lifetime half asleep. To my surprise, I shoot....a moment of silence....and both are still snoring. They didn't get to experience the 45 second thrill leading up to the shot, but that in itself will be a funny memory we'll laugh about for years to come. They did get to experience the thrill however when they walked up on the deer having no idea what was on the ground. Good times!..and my older son might not fall asleep on a hunt for the next few years. Ha!

Next time you decide to kill a monster like this at least take some better pictures!! Those are horrible, and you of all people know better. C'mon man!!!
Had i not left 8 hours before you pulling the trigger on this guy i would have had a nice photo session with you and that monster. Great buck, you worked hard for it and i couldn't be more happy for you and the boys. This is turning out to be a great season!
