So I get to the stand this morning and have a doe show up. Watched and waited and took the best shot she gave me at about 70 yards with my 30-30. I swore i saw her hit the ground..but I will be damnd if she didnt get up and start running directly at my stand. By the time I line up a running shot she jumped into woods and I missed again.
I always hunt with my 30.06, but decided to take the 30-30 with me this morning and paid for it with a miss. I know the gun is zeroed, just sighted in this week. If I would have had the 30-06, I would be on the way to the processor.
Anyways...all of this happened around 6:45 this morning.
My question is...should I have stuck around in the stand, even after shooting twice...in the hopes that other deer may have showed up, or do u think the shooting would have scared them all away?
I will be back in the stand this afternoon in hopes of seeing a nice buck..but just in case I miss again, need to know if I should stick around.

Always stick around, especially in the morning.

I always stay in the stand after I take a shot . I have had deer walk out with a dead deer on the ground and go to eating around them . Shots scare hunters more than deer I think .

I'd hang around. Your chances might decline but they're better than your chances of shooting anything around the campfire.

And why would the .30-06 kill her when a .30-30 wouldn't?

yeah don't ever leave. They do come back. If you don't move or make noise they do not associate the shooting with danger and will return to feed.

Not saying 30-30 would not kill her...what ii mean is that i am more comfortable with my 30.06 and have killed multiple deer with it...where as this was my first hunt using the 30-30

One of my dads lease hunters shot a buck and they had to track it 400 yards, hit it high in the lungs. Not much blood came out, it all stayed inside the cavity. At least it was just a doe and not a big ol buck though. The sound of the shot isnt as loud by the deer as it is all around it, for example one time I was tracking a doe in the thick brush while my bro in law stayed in the blind so when I jumped her he could get another shot into her. Well she jumped, I dropped to the ground, he shot and all I ever heard was the whiz of the bullet. Very odd and for those that say that was too dangerous, I wasn't that close to the deer when he shot.

So your blaming a bad shot on the gun? So tell us where you were aiming? I could understand if it was 350 yards, but 70? I bet it is down just inside the tree line.

Stay. Thursday we had a deer on the ground and had two more come in within 15 minutes. My wife was out of her stand when the first one showed and I had just driven up in my loud diesel truck when the second one showed.

Me too. It's hard to miss a deer size object at 70 yards unless your using iron sights. Need to probably go look some more.

Shot multiple deer from that stand. Don't mess with the area.

Also, learn to shoot.

no!!! I took a deer a couple years ago and left him in the cold for 2-3 hours and had another deer come for corn so 2 with only one trip.

Ok...let me clarify a bit here for everyone. First of all i was shooting down into a small valley 2nd the grass in the area is about 3 feet high or higher and all i could see was about 3-4 inches of her back. I waited until i had a neck shot and aimed a bit high..and if i hit her i. Her lungs there is no way i think she would have been able to run 70+ yards UP that steep [censored] hill my stand sits on. I looked and looked and the other guys did also. Nada. I dunno...i will take blame for missing its on me...not blaming gun...all i know is i have never missed with my 30.06...but miss the first Time i hunt with the 30-30
And after thinking about it...aiming high was not a good idea since the gun had been sighted at 50 yards and i was shooting downhill. I have seen numerous deer duck AFTER they hear the shot then run off.
Also...in clarification....when i say i saw her go down...i should have said i saw her disappear below the tall grass..i looked away a split second..worked the lever to chamber a new round...and then saw her running up the hill straight at me.
Anyways...i am pretty sure i did not wound her or i would still be looking for her.

Stick it out. Deer hear shooting regularly. They don't know what it is, so they will come back.

she did not go down because of a miss. You need to check real well for blood/hair sighs of a hit. Also check where she went into the woods she might well be very close to there.

Many times other deer will come in after a shot. Killed a buck a few years ago, got down field dressed him then walked 100 yards to a tank and got the blood from my hands and left the rifle next to the buck I had field dressed. When I got back up the hill there was a buck and doe 20 yards from the buck I had taken. Got back in the stand and saw 2 more deer in the next 30 minutes.

Ehh misses happen, what I posted (loudness) was in reference to should I have stayed or not. We have shot many times only to have deer come out just a few minutes later.
