Hi all. Can anyone suggest a guided, newbie-friendly, reasonable priced hunt/class where a guy who grew up in a midwest city can take his sons to learn to deer hunt? We now live in NW Houston area. Online I see several trophy type hunts which are quite expensive. We wouldn't know a trophy deer from a non trophy deer. Just want to start safely with good instruction, and not break the bank in the process. Have gone over safe gun handling with boys and taken to the range to shoot. But don't know anything about hunting.

The kids will need to attend a Hunters Safety course. It is a two day course and depending on who teaches it it can be very informative. It can be done online but since you actually want to learn and not just get the license the class is better.
Good luck and thanks for bringing your kids into a new sport.

There's a couple of guys in the Outfitters section that are offering spike, doe and cull hunts really cheap. DonK and Bowsandrods out of Bandera have some really great ads up. Give 'em a look.

You can also sign up for some great youth hunts here for very low cost. They need their hunter's safety card. http://texasyouthhunting.com/

The kids will need to attend a Hunters Safety course. If you were born on or after 9/2/1971 you will eventually need yours too. You can get a 1 year deferral until then. Here is a link to the TPWD site. Hunter Safety

Also i don't encourage it but you can buy the license without hunter safety. If you get caught its a fine, however you have 90 days to take the course DVD they drop the ticket

We are about 1 hour from you and do that sort of thing all the time. Just introduced a 29 year old to his first time shooting a rifle and first deer hunt.

Hunters safety course good idea but not required IF hunting with a parent that is a licensed hunter. Depending on your age you may have to take the course and if you do then you should take them too.

You should try Bows and Rods. John and Cody will help you with making the hunt an experience none of you will forget. Good luck on where ever you choose to go.
