My son is showing an interest in bowhunting and I'm thinking about getting him a compound bow. I'm a gunpowder & lead kinda guy, so I'm not too familiar with bows.

Any suggestions on type or where to buy? I'm looking at used (I can't belive the prices on new ones!!). He'll be 14 in a couple of weeks, so it would have to have somewhat of a light draw.

Get the diamond package. No need to spend a lot on a starter bow. Also you can later change the limbs and everything as he grows.

Before you do anything else, or make any purchase, go to your local pro shop and get him properly measured. Where are you located? One bow that you don't see much in the classifieds is the Mission Riot or Craze. The Craze new is about $299 and then you add your other stuff. This is a bow a young man can grow into with the big way you can adjust DL and DW.

And, its new with a warranty.....

Razor edge is a good little bow, my son had one and several hogs bit the dust on account of it

If you're not an expert, why are you making a recommendation?

Not blasting you, but the bow you just recommended would be good for hunting.

Bear and Diamond both have a package bow that are great starter bows IMO.

While I like what Mission has, since you're not into bow hunting, I'd recommend getting a package.

You do want to get your kiddo's draw length and let him hold any bow you're considering. They do have different feel to them.

He probably wants to hunt with the bow he buys. I bought a similar bow YEARS ago for my kids when they were about six years old. It is not a hunting bow....

My Mom just bought a Hoyt Ruckus and it seems to be a pretty good little bow and shoots pretty fast despite her 22 inch draw length. The Mathews Mission Craze on the other hand is one that has a ton of length and poundage adjustment and is one he could hunt with for a long time.

We're talking about a 14 year old boy. He won't last long in a kid bow, and probably will quickly max out a "grow as you go" bow. If he hasn't already started, he's going to hit a major growth spurt in the next year or two. He'll be man sized before you know it.


Take him to a pro shop, and let him shoot everything available that he can draw.

I just bought my son who will b 14 in jan. His first compound its an awesome bow at great price. Mission Riot bow was round 300 but it adjust from 40-70 lbs n 20-30 inch draws its a bow that can grow with them not just a yr or two bow shop i bought from had package bow completely set up for 399. Sons already shot two hogs with it. N i shot a nice doe with it in bow season. Think it wud b great bow for ur son. That or the "mission craze ". Basically same bow just shorter axile to axle. But same adjustment capabilities
