I finally got to hunt the last weekend of bow season in Kendalia. Got to the ranch a little behind schedule but no big deal. Plenty of light and still 2 hours before the feeders went off. Axis in the road as soon as we got through the gate. Dad shot a BIG doe at about 350 yards so the day started good. Got to my spot only to find that the popup blind Dad had set out for me wasn't big enough to draw in. No concelement close to the feeder so I decided to set on a rock behind the popup overlooking a game trail leading to the feader. I've only been set for about 15 minutes and I have a W/T doe almost step on me walking around the blind. In the open, no way to draw and she's 10 feet from me. Feeds on towards the blind. I get my bow up and out steps a 10 pt buck. Nice buck for the hill country. He has no idea that I'm there so I draw, pick my spot and let him feel the Muzzy MX-3. Buck ducks the string but still looks like a solid hit. No pass through but it's burried all the way to the fletching and he's pumping blood as he passes me. Give him an hour. Find blood easy, trail him for about 200 yards then the blood dries up to a trickle and then nothing. Look for about 4 hours and decide to come back in the light of day the next morning. Same thing the next morning. Blood just stops. Find my arrow about 30 yards from last blood drops in another pool of blood. A few more drops and then nothing. Fast forward to opening of gun season. Dad sits in the stand with a taxidermy buddy of ours. Out comes a decent buck and he drops him with the 243. When they get to the buck, find my arrow hole already healed over but the buck was limping bad. He was cut to the bone from his hock to his hoof on the right back leg. The only thing they can think is he kicked my broadhead out with his hind leg and gashed himself open.
I have pictures but can't post them from work. I can email them to someone if they can upload them for me.
Shoot low boys, they're riding shetland ponies! Lewis Grizzard I was actually laughing at myself at how little self control I have.
Let a nice rack walk into range and I lose it.

Man that blows!!! Hate to hear that man! I guess the only positive is that you got a little closure and know it didnt hide out somewhere and waste and die.

Wow. Cool story that the deer ended up making it to be taken later. The are some hardy animals.

Wow. Cool story that the deer ended up making it to be taken later. The are some hardy animals. they are we shot one with a 06' that was hit high. found the deer two weeks later at a water trough. for it to take 14 days to die is a testament
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

If you look at the top picture you can see on his back right leg where he kicked the broadhead out. I'm glad he didn't die of infection but he would have been my biggest bow kill to date.

Not in the pics that they took. It actually missed the spine by less than 1/8" of an inch. Shooting Muzzy MX-3 fixed blades. They didn't even find the wound until they skinned the dear and saw it from the inside.

A friend of mine shot a buck with his bow and had almost the same thing happen. He hurried his shot, and it went high. He thought he missed because there was no blood. But a few weeks later, he arrowed a buck and found the tip of the arrow broken off in his hip bone. The arrow was gone, but the broadhead was still there. The same guy shot a deer on the first day of archery season, and when he got it processed, they found a badly deformed .22 bullet in the meat. So, yeah, they are tough animals.
