Just curious who will be around out there. I have spent a lot of time camping/ hiking at LBJ, but this will be my first season spending any significant time deer hunting.
do most people sit in blinds/ tree stands? I plan on still hunting/ spot and stalk and I don't want to rub someone the wrong way.
what are the more heavily hunted units? not looking for anyones honeyhole, just don't want to step on toes as a newby.
thanks, Brandyn

I hunted there about 6 years ago. Too many people most of the time, IMO

What units did you hunt in? a few years ago I stuck to the outer units and didn't see too many other people. In fact, I hunted two of the northern units and didn't see/ hear sign of anyone else. I wasn't able to hunt the last two years because of work obligations, and was curious if the number of hunters out there has increased. I just want to be safe in the woods more than anything.

Not trying to highjack your thread, but how do you get permission to hunt out there? This is the one near Decatur right? I can't seem to find jack on their website.

I am curious about that too. We just might already have permission, it is public land. I do think you gotta wear orange, and plenty of it.

All you need is a license and hunter saftey. Hunter orange required. archery, shotgun, and muzzleloader only. you can only shoot does thursday-sunday thanksgiving weekend.

thanks for the suggestion. Why unit 30? seems like that location would be pretty heavily hunted. I'm not questioning, just want to know why you suggest it.
thanks, Brandyn

How about rabbits and small game in the off season with a dog? Anyone tried that? Is it even a good place to let a dog run?

Not bad during bow season. Orange army during gun season on the weekends and during the doe days.

Yep... I think spot and stalk will be tough during general season... was pretty crowded the times I went...

Don't spot and stalk. Too many hunters and you'll just run the deer to them. Best to sit off a trail and let the other spot and stalkers run them to you.

thats kind of what I figured. I'm actually planning on picking a spot to sit early morning and late afternoon, and still hunting during the day. I will be camping out there, so I plan on hunting all day when I'm there. I would gues with 76 units I'd be able to pick one that wouldn't be to heavily trafficked.

unit 51,62 ,18,73,71 are good. unit 18 is got deer and hogs cause i just went in there an caught 4 with my dogs. unit 18 is right out of alvord behind the church.. any unit around rush creek is good . unit 11 is good to. find a trail going in to private land , cause it seems that all the deer feed on private property . also around ruckers pound is good north decatur off 730

thanks. thats some great information. The only units I've hunted out there in the past are 57 & 60 near Rucker's Pond. Both times I only saw one other hunter/truck and saw two legal bucks and a few spikes. this was in 2009. Are the units you listed typically less traveled? I am really more interested in finding areas I can hunt without stepping on the toes of guys who have been hunting out there for years. Based on the limited scouting I have done out there, there are deer all over the place. it's just a matter of right place right time.

Spent Saturday afternoon driving around and scouting with my three year old daughter. found several spots with nobody on them. Anyone on here hunted during the doe days before? I plan on being out there every morning, unless its completely covered up and sounds like WW3. what can I expect if I stick to the outskirts?
thanks

I won't step foot on that place on the weekends. But on weekdays, you can have it to yourself.

Have fun with thanksgiving weekend for does, Thats what bow season is for out there. Too many hot heads with guns for my blood. Stick to the weekdays and it wont matter where you go since the traffic is so low.

I've only ever been on weekends, and it really doesn't seem to bad. I was out scouting last saturday and walked through several units without seeing or hearing anyone. what units were you going to that were so crowded?

well. I hunted every day over thanksgiving break. didn't get anything legal to come in until last night I had a doe pop up about 20' from me at 5:20. She busted me before I could get a shot off, and when she cleared out screaming the rest of the field did too. I saw two other does bolt, but I think there were probably 6-7 based on the grunting and screaming I heard back and forth afterwords. I'm pretty sick about it as this would have been my first deer. Oh well, back to hunting bucks. on a side note, I would like to fill some of my doe tags, does anyone know of a cheap ($100/day) doe/hog day lease around DFW that I would have a good shot of hunting off a feeder?
thanks, Brandyn
