So being newly stationed in Texas and not having much time to hunt I haven't been able to do much research into hunting on public land in the SA area. I have three weeks off around Christmas and was wondering if it was worth spending the money for the public land permit to duck hunt on. I have a 12ft jon boat with motor and was hoping someone could give me an idea on whether or not I would be wasting my money.

Yup. First time I have been in TX to think about hunting. Was in WA for the past five years and public access was much easier to find and hunt. Missed out on last season and only got one shot off at some geese in afghanistan

The APH permit would give you a couple options at the coast which is mostly walk-in and the areas are dealt out first come first serve. It can be really good. PM me if you want additional information.

Just thought of this, if your in the military, I think Ft.Hood might have some places you can hunt for free. I know they have cabins on lake B by the town of the same name and you might be able to duck hunt there.

I believe most of them (ponds on ft hood) are shut down for the rest of the year for training.

If you ever get up around Dallas Fort worth, PM me and I'll give you some good places to duck hunt and they're public land and water.

I know they have cabins on lake B by the town of the same name and you might be able to duck hunt there. At this time it is a major pain in the backside to get gun access on Ft.Hood. There is NO reason to jump through all the hoops when Ft.Hood sets between two Corps of Eng. lakes only 20 min. either way that offer public hunting with Barneys and Topwaters. Do your home work and you will find a hole all to yourself.

It will open up a lot of land that you would not have access to otherwise. It is not limited to ducks. If it were up to me, members of the armed services would need only present their miltary id to hunt any species on any public land in Texas...and the state would be getting the better end of the deal. Thanks for your service!
