Hey guys, I was looking back through some photos this morning that got me to thinking about my first duck hunt. I have been hunting since I was just a kid. Mostly deer, dove, quail, turkey, hogs, etc. But I actually did not get into duck hunting until a few years ago. Anyways I was wondering how many of yall remember your first duck hunt..and what your first duck was. If you have pics..post em up. Here is mine. I had to twist my dads arm to get him out duck hunting because he really had no interest at the time. We went out on a rather warm morning. Neither of us knew much about duck hunting besides what I had been reading in books. Nor did I even know anyone who had ever duck hunted to learn from. I bought a call and cd, and practiced my butt off until i felt confident enough to try it for real. That morning, we did not see that many birds. The ones we did see, were flying in the distance. Finally I saw two birds pick up in the distance and fly across several hundred yards to my right. I blew a couple of quick calls, and to my amazement, the two birds turned and flew strait for my decoys. They came in from my right at about a 90 degree angle in front of me. The first thing I noticed was the green head on one of them. I fired two shots knocking both birds to the water at about 20 or so yards. You talk about a thrill. I was stoked and from that moment on I have been hooked on duck hunting and rarely find myself out deer hunting during duck season. I remember my dad saying that I fired too quick to give him a chance at the second one. I just bounced back with a you snooze you lose comment. It was a great morning with my dad I will never forget. Id like to know about your first hunt and what your first duck was.

Mine was a Suzie, back in Arkansas where I grew up. We killed limits. As did literally every single hunter in the county. Opening day 1999 was epic. We had snow flurries on and off, one of the few times I saw snow in that county, and the earliest by at least 6 weeks.

I'm sorry but the picture cracks me up.
My first duck was a banded wood duck drake when I was about 8 or 9 I went with my uncle and his buddy to a flooded creek bottom and was just along for the hunt. My uncle had to pee and said if a duck comes in shoot it. Well sure enough here comes a bird his buddy fires three shoots boom boom boom I send one out on a hail Mary and the bird dives in to the creek channel. Off goes his prized retriever and 10 minutes later fighting a current and swimming bird brings back the banded woodduck drake.

Mine was a wood duck. I was standing in a soybean field shooting doves with a Harrington and Richardson single shot 20 gauge when a duck flew over. I knocked it down with the last shell i had and chased it around the field for an hour before I got it. I was 8 years old.

3 seasons ago I got home from out of town for work and missed the end of deer season by a day or two. Decided to try duck hunting for the first time. Went by myself and got this, my only duck that season:

First duck I got with Sniper John. I had been trying to learn on my own on public with zero experience or connections on duck hunting. I wasn't doing too hot After we took that victory shot, we ran up a creek where we were seeing the gadwall light all morning and managed to jump a couple. Blaze with the birds. That was five years ago. A ton of gas money has been spent since then! John and I have had some awesome adventures together and I have really got the bug. Every time I think of that hunt or see the pictures I wish I had that GWT on the wall, I'm not sure I've seen a more perfect specimen since.

I know the feeling dave. I got hooked quick too. I used to be die hard deer hunter. Now i prefer duck hunting. I still deer hunt..but not nearly as much.
Definately a ton of gas money has gone into it though.
Dave, that shot of the dog on the canoe is a awesome. Good looking dog. Is that yours or sniper johns?
Sounds like you guys have gotten some cool ducks for your first. I was pretty proud of the greenhead for mine too. I have only managed to get one other since then. I just dont see them much in the areas I hunt.
