Hunting can be off the hook! Low hunter pressure and vast amounts of space to hunt. Scout and hook up with some locals are the keys!

there are a lot of guys on here that have gone to tech and hunted the area while they were there. What I did; mid 90's, was to get to know the farmers in the area that I wanted to hunt. Most will let you hunt if you have good manners and get to know them. My brother and I always helped during harvest time to show our graditude for them granting us access to there land. Good luck and buy a good waterfowl jacket for that 30+ mph north wind. lol. Kyle

sweet man and i do have a pretty good jacket from last Christmas. With so many fields and wide open spaces how do you even start to scout out there? Cause when i get out there I honestly can't even find the highway i came in on. I guess my question is without seeing the geese or ducks what in the world am I looking for out there that would have what a bird needs.

Welcome to the forum and to Lubbock, I work in Lubbock and live in out in the sticks. Birds and Coyotes are about it around Lubbock. Being that your in the migratory section, you will be glad to know that Lubbock will be full of as many canada geese (mostly lesser but a fare share of greaters) as you can imagine in the fall and winter months. Ducks are plentiful as well. The only problem that I have seen in the past few years is that since so many geese have decided to winter here that outfitters are popping up left and right. Where once most farmers with a visit would gladly allow you to hunt their fields or playa lakes, now most are under contract with outfitters, or have seen $$$ and want get in on a little cash flow for themselves. Im sure there are still a few of the good old boys around but they are far between. The further you get away from the city the better. Most of the geese roost inside the Lubbock city limits and fly out to feed. As for pics look under the photo section for 06-09-08, I posted a mallard drake with a reward band that I got just west of Lubbock. Let me know if you have any further questions.

All over, Just depends on which field they have found to feed in. The best way to find them is to go to one of the playa lakes in the afternoon and wait for them to leave for their afternoon feeding. Just follow them from a distance, usually the next morning they will go back to the same place they fed the evening before. Thats where locating the land owner (tricky)part comes in. They tend to use a field until they have wiped it clean and then find another. The experience's I have had with them is even if you have a great spread but are not in the field they are wanting to go to, then your chances are slim in convincing them to decoy. They tend to feed primarily in cut milo fields, not so much in wheat unless milo crops had a bad year. Hope this helps

sweet man I cant wait to get out there and do some hunting. Ill probably go buy some decoys and a lay out blind before I move in to my dorm. have you ever used 2D decoys(the flat ones) if so are those a better buy, to get a larger spread. Or do the geese really notice that there are a bunch of paper punch outs in the field.

It sure helps to be where the birds want to land! I like what the duckcommader says "You want to look like a good duck caller, just set your spread up where the ducks want to land."
That's some good info you posted!

I use to hunt with some guys that had probably 500 real geese pro series sillouettes, and did pretty good. I would recomend not going too cheap, the shiney decoys don't work worth a flip. Early in the season they would probably due, but the birds tend to get educated after getting peppered a few times. Numbers tend to the key. They feel more comfortable landing in a bigger spread. I have around a hundred or so decoys myself mix of sillouettes and shells but really didn't hunt them much last season. The big numbers get here around Thanksgiving and will stay til spring. Good Luck.

Lots of good deer, turkey, and hog hunting an hour east of there. Male some friends. You better keep your firearms off campus or you won't be there long!!

if you go north in the panhandle, there is lake meredith. it is north of Amarillo. you can hunt deer, quail, waterfowl, coyotes in quail season, and occasionally will jump a pheasant. and it's all free.

This has got to be a joke!
If you are a "duck hunter for life"
You would already know about the panhandle...

now I do, Ive never been there hunting or during hunting season, only heard some stories about it but never really knew. looks like I got four good hunting seasons ahead of me that I know of. being that I am from Louisiana and have done ALL of my duck hunting there I figured that I would give Lubbock a shot.

so cut sorghum fields are pretty good? guess I just got lucky with my new job. We have a pretty good size piece of sorghum. None of my co-workers are waterfowlers so I am not getting any info from them. I have very high hopes for this season.
