What do y'all make of this? A friend sent this, asking my opinion. My opinion is that this a very mature buck with a fatty tumor or hernia and that he should cull this deer. I've seen these growths on deer before but never this big. This is a Hill Country deer, out of San Marcos.

It could be one of 2 things. It could be from a thorn of some sort that got infected or a snake bit. It will probably bust open and drain. Don't think it is effecting his eating since he is at the feeder and in great shape. I have seen a buck that had been snake bit and it busted open. I have seen bucks with small ones but never shot one. I have seen pics of bucks like this also. Someone else may have some better insight.

Lance it with a .22 grin

Had to take a cow in that looked like that. We originally thought it was a snake bite, but vet said it was more than likely a mesquite thorn.

It is either the ranch where the county road on the west side goes into to the north. They used to feed protein and killed some really great bucks back about 10 yrs ago.

LF and LP knows the name off it. It borders Freeman and then runs to the river. I have not been on it in 10 yrs. It could have been split and sold.

This buck is on a ranch near the Freeman (owned by Texas State Univ) and Ingram (Ingram Ready Mix) ranches. The ranch Stx is talking about is the old Fulton Ranch, which was then owned by Emmit McCoy (McCoy's Lumber), then he sold it to O'Quinn (lawyer that won the tobacco law suit on behalf of the state of Texas). After O'Quinn died a few years ago in a collision the ranch was sold to the LaMantia family from S. Tx. They own the beer distributors from the Rio Grande Valley to southern NM.

Stx,
Emmit McCoy also owns a good bit of the Glass Mountains. Not sure what the name of the ranch is, but he owns a lot of territory out there.

The Fulton Ranch is now called the Needmore Ranch (go figure). They have a high fence portion that has some introduced northern bucks and bred does. There's some really big deer in there. No commercial hunting out there. Invite only.

good to know LP, I have been working out there since May. Bummer thing is they cancelled the hunting lease this year which is the primary reason I wanted to be out there, they had some really good stuff going on towards management as far as getting the cc and ratio right and letting deer get old. I have seen some really nice bucks the last two weeks. University politics, what are you gonna do.
