I got away for the weekend and went to my favorite spot outside of Portland. I've hunted the same point on opening day for 8 years now. The day started great, birds in and out before lst, good hot coffee, and the company of Earl, my lab. Right at legal time a group of about 30 divers crashed in and landed in the pocket. Redheads and bluebills. I waited till a nice drake bluebill swam away from the group and jumped them, one shot, one dead duck. I'm not real big on trying to shoot my limit in five minutes and leaving so I took my time and picked one bird from each group that came in over the course of the next hour. All the while letting a small army of shovelers come and go. It was perfect, the ducks worked like they only do on the opener and Earl nailed every retrieve. I will admit it was nice being done before my thermos was empty though! Hope everyone did well and stayed safe this weekend.
John

Very nice hunt.
What kind of flooring do you have in the bottom of your Godevil boat?

Nice.

What's the story of the ruddy decoys?

I collect ruddy decoys and take them out once in a while. This spot usually has some early on in the season. They add some character to the spread. I like to put the pair out away from the main spread by about 20 yards toward the open water side. Just a little detail but it seems to keep other divers calm if they swim in. Or it may not help at all, either way I just like them!
