I shot an 8 this morning around 6:40 an I checked the arrow about 30 minutes later. With good blood on it. We have him about an hour an a half to look for him and couldn't get a good blood trail and jumped him. We backed out and are going to give him more time. I shot him with my bow at 25 yards away and the hit seemed good.

What color was the blood? How far had he gone before bedding?

Bright red blood. Maybe 70 yards

Was the deer broadside or quartering?

Yeah complete pass through. The left and right was good. The up and down I'm not to sure of.

If he did not bleed much then I am guessing you hit high and maybe only got the top of one lung. Was there much blood where he bedded? From bedding so fast he got sick feeling quick.

We didn't go to where he bedded. As soon as we saw him jump we backed out.

The direction he bedded was it the same direction he came in from? How thick is it?

No it was not the same direction. And yes it was thick

If you go back after giving him a few hours and don't find anymore blood, or find where he might have laid down, then it's probably safe to assume that the hit was none lethal, and without a blood trail you are just going to push him and every other deer out of your area randomely searching.
My hunting partner hit a buck opening day and swore it was a good hit, and the same senerio we found a little blood and the arrow, but two weeks later the buck shows back up at the same feeder, same spot, and he finally took the buck. Found out his first shot just grazed the back and took a chunk out of the hide above the shoulder and had no effect on the deer.
In your case if you find evidence where the buck might have laid down and pool of blood then I'd wait a little longer before searching again, as you might have jumped him off his bed.

I would give the buck 4-6 hrs. Then one person go in and check the bed for sign. Then make the decision from that sign what to do next. If you do track him have one person look for sign and one person look for the deer if he is bedded. Sometimes if they are sick they will not go far to bed again in thick cover. Was he laboring or crashing into things when running?

I would try to get a dog.

Sounds like a high hit. I have found that the tracking gets much tougher after they have bedded and are jumped. If it was a fatal hit, he shouldn't be far from where he bedded.

if he bedded within 70 yards he is most likely a dead deer .....
a non lethal hit wont make a deer bed that close to where he was shot in my opinion .....he might be light liver shot and just cut it a bit , the blood will be real dark red .....if you dont push him he will probably be done pretty close to where you jumped him ,,,,in 4 to 6 like ranchman says

If you have a tank or creek nearby a deer will usually head for water when hit, but as mentioned if you believe the hit is lethal then the dog is your best bet.

If the deer bedded down that quickly after you hit him, it probably was a lethal hit.

My rule of thumb is that I wait at least an hour before I start tracking a deer if I am sure it is a GOOD hit (double lung). Anything less, wait at least 4 hours.

The best are the heart shots - usually you will see them go down 20 yards from where you hit them and they go into the death "dance". You let that pass (5 minutes) and then you go get your deer.

At this point I would wait until late this afternoon and see if you can pick up a blood trail from where he was bedded down when you jumped him. I bet you can find him.

Take it from somenone who has lost one really nice buck because of going after him too soon - you will never do that again. No one could have ever warned me enough I had to experience it for myself before I believed in the importance of waiting.

I've only shot 2 doe with my bow. And both ran about 40 yards. Never experienced anything like this. If I could find this buck it would be my biggest buck. And my first with a bow. I just have a sick feeling in my stomach.

Know how you feel but have patience and you'll find it!!!

If you don't find the buck or finally run out of blood trail, you've done all you can do, and don't continue to feel bad for hitting the deer.
I've tracked many that seemed like they were fatally hit, and ended up seeing them later in the season with scars but otherwise healthy.
They are tough animals to say the least.

My stepdad tracked one for over 2 hours. It kept getting up, moving a bit. Then bedding down. Did ya find it?

No I didn't. We looked for probably 5 hours and didn't find much blood and just had to walk around the whole time.
