Good point, but every deer is different. Ears aren't always 13" and sometimes wider. I think he is being responsible in letting it walk.

The more i study him the more i agree somewhere in the 12.5 range.he will live another year as long as he stays on my place.

I read where the average ear width layed out flat are 16-17 wide and alert position 13'' give or take a little.

I agree 100%, just trying to give a little insight so he can get an idea where to start

I don't think he will make 12". The rut will bring more bucks out to see. Just stick with it.

To determine if a buck has an inside spread measurement of at least 13 inches, look at the distance from ear-tip to ear-tip on a buck with ears in the alert position (see illustration).

You'll have bigger deer come in. This will help teach your son patience. Good luck.

Not even close. That is the only reason I really dislike ARs. Adults can just suck it up but I hate it for a kid who really wants to shoot a buck.

im going 13 1/4''. that deer is 3.5 so his head has some size on it. agreed all deer have a differnet size head and the pics they show in the book is going to be for a young deer to make sure you are safe. i would say shoot and let us know.

He's close but I'd wait. Cool thing is when one shows up that is legal, you'll know it as soon as you see him. You'll be sitting in the stand and all of a sudden he'll show up and you'll think to yourself, "Dude!! he looks just like the one in the TPWD book!!" Then the heart starts thumping. Game on...
