Kind of a necropost, but Andrew seems to not only be a knowledgeable person, but his feet are firmly planted in reality and not the silly place too many people think "tacticool" resides. As an example, if you haven't seen his SPOOF video, then you should. For the anally-retentive, it is HUMOR. Hopefully that was already apparent....

Great info
i've been looking for 'next step up' rifle for youth (22 to 243 is too big of a jump)
although the article did not address my needs directly, it was a great primer for what I need to know.
thanks.

Kinda scared... haven't seen a cop that could shoot yet... Your not hanging with the right crowd! I will admit, I shot better at 100yds with a handgun than some did with their carbine! Sad. I had LEO's avoid me on the range. I expected them to practice SOME since last qualification.... I am not a perfectionist. Never have, never will. Always look to improve. Sad, but some, a few, had not taken their gun out of the holster since last qauls. This was also noted on their Firearms Proficiency Sheet when I signed off on it. I also was not afraid to send someone back for remedial training. No Good old boy here, my signature was on the bottom line saying they were Good To Go.

I aknowledge the AR has served it's purpose, but its sad to think thats the best we've come up with since 1957.

Other stuff has been invented. The Scar/ACR, Sig 516, ect. Besides being piston driven I don't think they really offer anything to justify the cost to change to them. Then again I am just a regular civilian who just enjoys guns so I don't really know what the military thinks.

If there is a limitation or two to the platform, they aren't what people generally think.
1) lack of BCG over-travel. This is, imo, the biggest difference which contributes to the reliability of the AK platform. The fit time I handled an AK I was amazed at how far the BCG moves back vs the AR15. That over travel gives the platform for room for error if there's dirt/grime/buildup which slows the blot down going backward, and gives the magazine spring more time to lift the next round fully.
A short stroke on an AK may not be noticed at all (depending on how bad), while an AR15 short stroke is almost inevitably a failure to feed and or eject.
2) the lower mag well is a bit inflexible. If it could be made a little longer, perhaps a little wider, with a shorter front to allow for better feeding of a more tapered cartridge. There's nothing wrong with this in terms of 5.56/.223, but current options would be improved a little if the magwell was bigger.
The LWRC Six8 is a good example of the capabilities being expanded greatly by a small magwell change.

1. The problem I see with pistons is added weight and recoil. It's much harder to keep round after round on target with an AK than it is with an AR. I have never tried a piston AR so I can't comment on that.
2. I am not quite sure what you mean here. You mean like a more flared magwell?
If we forced to change from the 5.56 I think a 6.5 Grendel would be the best replacement. The 5.56 is working fine though.

1) bolt carrier over travel and the operating mechanism are different things. I've sold my AK so I cannot measure this, but I would guess the bolt travels at least 2-3" farther on an AK than on an AR. I think what people attribute to piston operation (functioning in terrible environments) is actually more attributable to that -- plus most AKs are quite over gassed. The bolt travel and overgassed nature means they're highly tolerant of things getting in the way/slowing down the bolt. Does that make sense? 2) Not a flared magwell, but a bigger magwell that accepts larger magazines. Magpul makes a 30 round Six8 magazine for the new(ish) LWRC rifles that use the new lower/magwell. It gives greater capacity/capability to the platform.
