Ensuring the Future
My recollections of public hunting also include pursuing puddle ducks and divers on DU projects across Canada, tolling black ducks in the salt marshes along the New Jersey coast, calling mallards through the flooded timber on Arkansas's famed Bayou Meto, and running and gunning on rivers and reservoirs throughout America's heartland. These and many other hunts have provided grand memories to warm the winter of my years, and given me the firm conviction that we must conserve the tradition of public hunting to ensure the future of our sport.

Many unsung heroes had the vision and foresight—and indeed worked hard and sacrificed—to ensure that we all have places to hunt waterfowl. It's our responsibility to pass on this legacy to future generations. Our heritage as waterfowlers demands no less.

Did thay shut-down only the land access .... in other words ... can you still git there in a boat ?

You can still get there by land or boat. The environmental study specifically addresses boating in Little Mineral. The concern is that the land has been or will be conveyed to the City of Denison where no hunting is allowed; at all.

On page 82 there is a map showing proposal 4 which is the approveed proposal. Unfortunately it even shows shoreline that is titled “protected shoreline”. Not sure what that means. So I guess you can get there by boat. The question is: Can you step out of it to hunt? I am guessing no.

Well .... I'm a long way from this area that ya'lls are typin' 'bout ... but I am concerned 'bout loosin' public style of huntin'. I was there when the "Type II" land started and later becamce "WMA" ... Part of the WMA is a good concept ... but we still have to pay to hunt the same waters we used to hunt freely !!!

I also live in a area that the city of wants to come in .... just last nite thay sent a cop by doin' a survey .... I am concerned 'bout our future .....

Yep, a lot of the land that became part of the original Type II was land that had been open to us for free prior to the permit, and yet there is other public land out there in state control not open for hunting that could be.

Hunting access to public lands across the state is always going to be dynamic. The trend of whittling it away will certainly continue, but as for the corps lake in question. There also has been corps land opened for hunting on this lake in recent times where hunting previously was not allowed. Possibly more than has been removed.
