Are there leases where you can kill meat only and not cost as much? I mean i see the prices for a day hunt and such seems aweful alot just for someone that wants a deer for food. Would public hunting be the best way for this type of hunt?

I would ask some of your friends that have a lease,if you do that is and ask them if they mind if you take a spike or a doe without fawns. I have a buddy that comes with me one weekend during season and I let him do just that. It is worth a shot.

Public land is probably the least expensive option but, it aint cheap either after paying for hunting license + APH permit + gas + food + processing (if necessary) = high dollar per pound meat.
Some outfitters/ranches/MLD properties or day hunt places offer doe hunts for a reasonable fee. ($100 ~ 200).
Killing deer for food only doesn't make much financial sense, take the same $$$ and buy meat from Costco / Sams club and be way ahead $ per pound wise.

If you truely want it just for meat, put a wanted add for a doe in the clasifieds.. Im sure there are people on here on mld properties that have to shoot so many deer they dont know what to do with them all and would give you some.
The first two years we had our ranch we didnt shoot any deer to rebuild population, thats how we got our deer meat, a frind gave us some mld does, not let us shoot them, we came and picked up dead deer.

I have found a couple doe hunts on places for 100 bucks a deer in the past, most of them I had to drive 3 hours or more too, but never failed to get a deer.

$100 is a heck of a deal even if it isnt "nearly guaranteed". Most of the time I see them advertised for $300 for meat hunts.

ALWAYS a meat hunter- mainly does. My father was correct: "No matter how long you boil those horns- they ain't gettin edible" And I'm not much for puttin things on the wall. With that being said: That does not mean if a nice buck comes out I'm goin to give him a pass.

If you can find someone who owns a ranch w/a trophy buck fee system that you are friendly with you may get to remove their mgmt does. I used to shoot up to 40 or more a yr. and we ate most that didn't go to the owners, charity, ect..I usually used about 7 or 8 a yr. But it is never free..I usually ended doing a little reloading, rifle work, welding on the ranch ect..Just part of getting a new friend..Don

I see these folks on TV taking Deer and tootin' their horn about how the meat donation will be appreciated by millions of people in millions of countries and it's sickening. It's nothing but wasteful to kill an animal your not going to eat. I was raised to eat whatever it is that you kill. My Dad saw to that. When I see Deer, I see little white packages of meat stacked up in the freezer. Antlers are just icing on the cake. I'm gonna eat my cake. And that's not because I'm a fat kid either.

I meat hunt. Asking friends if I can tag along is what I do when I can't afford a lease. Have also out an add on here before and got a 100 doe hunt. I've also hunted corp of engineer land with bow with no success but have killed turkey duck and dove there

Trophy hunting is unethical in my opinion. Taking a an animal strictly for sport or a trophy is wrong. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but im quite sure that trophy hunting was not what the Good Lord meant when he put man in charge of his creations.

Theres a lot of places in the USA where guys still hunt for meat be it deer or elk, but Texas aint one of them. If you did the price per LB comparison even a doe hunt at $100 a piece aint a baragin. If you live in states that have lots of public land theres a lot of options for a guy to put meat in the freezer with a little work and not a lot of money its very possible. IMO you cant call yourself a meat hunter if you hunt in Texas unless you have a local state park or public use area close to home, or hunt on family land for free. Just the gas money alone to travel to most places to hunt would do you a lot of good at the meat section in HEB!

If most people hunted just for meat, a lot of the deer hunting industry would collapse. Can't have that now can we?
One good thing though. No more of the endless 'age and score' requests. Wait, maybe it would be a good thing LOL

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but im quite sure that trophy hunting was not what the Good Lord meant when he put man in charge of his creations. If trophy hunting wasn't in the lords design he wouldn't have given deer various antler characterics and they would all be the same size or have no antlers at all. Goes for any horned animal. Some animals arnt edible period. Donating meat to the needy is fantastic IMO.

Those of you that profess to be on some higher moral ground than trophy hunters are fooling yourselves. Because of the cost involved all deer hunting in Texas is for sport. The meat is a side benefit to the activity that we love.
The grocery store is closer and cheaper, and beef is generally better than deer.
There is nothing wrong with donating meat to those who need it and will use it. What's sinful is leaving it rot. I don't know of anyone but poachers that do that.
And all of you who claim to be meat hunters will become a trophy hunter the very instant a 160 class 10 point walks into view. Don't deny it.
