Just want to say this bow hunting stuff is pretty wild. I hunt in Dime Box and have the antler restrictions to contend with but hae no objections to them. Having only started deer hunting 7 years ago we have harvested 3 bucks. I purchased a Wicked Ridge crossbow 2 weeks ago to try and harvest a doe for the freezer so that it would take the pressure off taking a buck. What a thrill. I set up sunday morning about 15 yds from the feeder under a live oak and some brush.(the brush ended up being poison oak )I set up my folding chair and settled in at 5:45 am. was reading the board on my phone ad saw a doe and fawn at the feed at 6:50. I guess the wind swirled cuz she got nervous and went down wind of my position and started to blow. i thuoght I was done but waited. at 7:45 an old grey doe a young doe and three fawns came out of the woods to the feeder. I had a beed on the older doe when she freaked went down wind of me and started to blow. the other doe and fawns started looking at her like whats up. I let one rip. Hit her good. the age 2 did the job. she ran about 60 yds and crashed. it was a 15 yd shot. good pass thru. it was great time. Oh and I havent broke out yet from th poison oak

Not trying to rain on your parade but why would you shoot a doe (based on pics was still nursing) with two fawns? At least tell us the fawns didn't have spots. That was pretty disappointing and I don't know that I would call that success unless family is starving and you had to put food on table. If that was the case then - am happy for you.

You would hope the babies are already eating on their own. They should by now anyways. Deer are pretty tough animals. Her fawns will be just fine I think. Just think of all the places around Texas that are taking does this time of year. Heck, some places I know of it's required to kill two does, THEN you can take your buck. Nothing wrong with taking them early.

I have no issues at all with taking does but common sense and self control dictates whe and which ones to take. If "Hope", "should" or "think" factor into the equation at all one passes on taking the doe to keep from orphaning two fawns. I am assuming that the original poster meant to say yearlings. Its just posts like this that gives certain animal rights groups, etc ammo to go against this sport we love. Just saying.

ok so i have never shot a bow yet and i heard that once you do it you wont go back to rifles. do you no anyone that would be able to help and show me how to do it?

The fawns are eating regular food for the most part now. They will hook up with other deer. The aren't prepared to be on their own for sure but it's no different if the doe got caught in a fence or hit by a car. I personally hate shooting them so late that I find fully developed fawns in them or when the fawns are with them and have spots but I have shot wet does in mid November so it's not always easy to judge.

You know. all I can say is wow. This is our seventh season to hunt. My son and I have taken 3 bucks in the last six seasons. A spike, a 8 pt scored in the mid 120's and a 10 point 138. last years I watched an impressive eight all summer but he came in busted up with only a brow tine left on one side so I passed. someone else shot him. so I picked up a crossbow so I could put some meat in the freezer. so that is what I did. I feed year round and also run the cameras year round. when we started we only ever saw 2 doe. now I have up to eight at a time with fawns. Most fawns drop in june in my area but a couple drop in late july early august. the ones that drop in august still have spots. the ones with these 2 fawns had no spots and were a little smaller that the doe I shot.So I guess why all the negativity. dont ever assume anything. it is still hunting. I have studied and researched to become as successfull at it as I can be. I still had to pick my spot to play the wind and get a shot. So to all that gave good feed back thanks. to all the rest well you know.

If you can't say anything nice why say anything at all. Comments like that set the hunting world at each others throat. It is legal and the way he does it, if you don't like it, set him up to hunt the way you do at your own expense.

Ignore the negative comments. 3 bucks in 6 seasons between 2 people and a doe. That sounds like some hunters who are not going crazy shooting everything that moves to me. In seasons where it rained good in Spring sometimes it is impossible to find a doe without twins! And if you have plenty of deer, some have to go for the good of the herd. Congrats!

Congrats on the harvest. Just do what pleases you and don't pay attention to all of the negativity.
