Well, why it took into my early 30s to start this great passion I don't know. But three years ago I started hunting, thanks to my BIL. After two seasons of disapointment, which only fueled my desire to kill a buck....my dreams came true. I got on an 80ac lease in Throckmorton County, which hopes of next year getting on my BIL's lease with a couple other friends next year, this lease at least put me within a 10min drive from camp at thier lease. I looked at the property once, mostly wheat fields with a small patch of woods and couple tanks, and paid the man. Opening weeked of dove season, I returned to put up cams, feeders, blinds, etc. I put up a Covert Black Ops camera that texts me the pics as soon as they roll in. After a week, I got the first look at him!

Man, to say I was excited about the 29th of Sept was a massive understatement! I practiced hard under the exact scenario as my two setups, shooting lots of arrows out of the same pop ups, in my exact cloths, even filmed myself shooting to see how i could better conceal myself in the blind. Fast forward to last weekend, saturday morning not an animal one showed up. Determined, I got right back in the blind Saturday evening, and guess who showed up about an hour into my sit! As I waited for a shot, I calmed my pounding heart, and ran through a mental checklist of form, aim, etc. When the time came, I pulled the trigger on my release, little did I know it was only the start to a 24hr roller coaster of emotions! He was hurt bad, ran into the field and did the wobble of death three times before crashing 94yrd from me....but not dead, head up and looking around. After 30min, he tried to get up but couldn't, 30 more minutes and he struggled to his feet and slowly walked 100yrds into the small patch of woods leaving me with an empty sick feeling. waiting till dark I returned to camp, watched the film (yes I videoed my first buck kill) and we were confident he was sure to die soon. We waited about 4hrs trailed good blood for a couple hundred yards into the woods, then decided best to wait till morning. First light we picked up where we left off, trailed good blood for another 200yrds, then the worst.......no more blood anywhere! we searched and searched, then spent two hours trying to get in touch with a blood dog...shortly after lunch we had a guy from FT Worth about to jump in his truck and leave. At this point we had returned to camp to think this through and wait on the dog! while at camp we visited the land owner to discuss crossing property lines, which he made some calls and got the all clear to do, but also mentioned he had to run over to the property to check on some farm equipment....Text rolls in a bit later, blood dog is 5 min from jumping in truck and headed our way....5min later my phone rings from the land owner, "hey matt, you can call off your blood dog, I found your deer! I am standing 20yrds from him, but his ear twitched, think he still is barely alive, get over here quick!" Only my BIL and I will know what speed that F150 was hitting to make the 15mi drive, but when we got there we found the deer still hanging on, 20ft from the road, 40yrds from where we enter the property and park, and 1000yrds from where we lost his blood trail! The land owner said when asked how the heck he found him, "I was thinking about this deer all night and had a premanition, when I got here I went stright to him"! I walked to 20yrd and put him to rest and finally got to put my hands on him!

The events unfolded somewhat live on sunday on the green screen....

Congrats on your buck and first bow kill. You are a very lucky man to have found your buck. Sometimes we find them and sometimes with a story like that we don't. Congrats and enjoy your trophy!

Great deer. Where did you hit him the first time? Strange that he would still be alive the next day after he was wobbling around 100 yards from where you shot him.

How the heck did that deer go that far????

Would that shot not have gotten both lungs or was that the second and final kill shot? Where did you get him the first shot?
