I'm in the process of figuring out what guy to buy... it'll be a 308 and used mostly for deer/hog hunting. I've come to the conclusion I'll likely buy a 3-9x40, however am open to 4-12 or anything in between. I'd like to spend $200 or less, but am open up to the max price of $300. Any suggestions welcome... Right now my considerations are: Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 Leupold VX-II, 3-9x40 though not sure I can justify 2x the price over the Nikon.

If used isn't an option the pro staff is probably one of the most popular in the current generation at the price point.
They will hold zero be clear and allow plenty of light. If you don't jump to a zeiss conquest there is no reason to spend another dime unless( you find a deal on a bushnell 4200 3-9, Nikon team promos or a cheap vortex from cameralandy)
the pro staff is significantly brighter than the leupold rifleman and vx1 and very comparable to the vx2. Also don't be swayed by the red field made by leupold. The warranty/customer service is sketchy but it's great glass for the money.
Only other suggestion would be a Burris ffii combo if you need binoculars. It's a couple dollars more is as clear and has a better reticle than the pro staff.

I could use some binoculars, so may give that a look.... I'm also not opposed to used, but somewhat prefer new.

The other kicker is sit side by side and look. You should be able to decide which works best for you.

I just bought a Burris FF II E1 from SWFA a couple months ago. I have only had Leupold and some junk up to this point but so far I really like it. Think it was $208 from Buds and SWFA price matched.

Vortex Diamondback $199. I have some Vortex Crossfires I spent $100-$130 on and I cant really tell any improvement with a higher priced diamondback. I ran my $99 crossfire side by side with a buddies Leupold VX-II sitting in the hog blind and couldnt see any real difference between the two either. I also ran a crossfire against a bushnell elite 4200 and liked the crossfire better.

Nikon or Burris mentioned above are good options. Another CameralandNY still has some of the Vortex Viper 2-7X32 for 199.99 Have that one and Leupold and Nikon and like the Vortex better.

Nikon pro staff, Leupold VXii and NIkon Buckmaster...own all of them and no complaints. However, I bought my first Zeiss Conquest last year and my second one this week. In the process of replacing all of the above with the Zeiss, great clear scope for the money!
Wish I had known about the THF codes, just bought a Zeiss Conquest and DZ scope mount from SWFA, could have used the discount! Dangitt!
Thanks ju993rnaut for future!

I just tested the THF discount codes mentioned above on the SWFA website, and received a message that they were invalid. When is the last time you successfully used these?
Nevermind, I just checked Skylar's signature and it requests that you send him a PM for discount codes.

Spend the extra $29 and get a 3-9x40 Zeiss from the SWFA sample list while they still have them. With the THF discounts (Is it still 10% and free shipping?), it actually comes out to less than $329.95!

Skylar, not sure that those codes are working... or are they only valid on particular items?

As of right now, I have a Bushnell Elite E3940 on order... my after rebate cost should be about $140. Not sure if any of the others are better at the $140 price point. I know the nikon pro staff would be about the same price as that right now.

No, they work on any and everything.
If you cannot get them to work, please call, and I will start working on having that remedied.
The new Nikon Prostaffs are a great scope, but I personally do not think that they are equal with Bushnell's Elite line.

Stangfish, I also have been pleasantly surprised by the Sightrons on a 30-06.

Dave, Most people do not know it but opticaly and mechanicaly the Sightron Big Skys are on par with VX3's and Conquests. That makes this Big Sky a bargain a 204 after rebate. SWFA has them on sale as well. You can keep your money in Texas and I here that there is a THF special that will save you some money. They are made in japan not china.
