I am considering adding a scope to a Thompson BP gun. To date have used it with iron sights. What should I look for in a good BP scope?

Amos- There are several thing that you are wanting to look for. First making sure that it is rated for Muzzelloading or black powder? Second is the magnification range suitable for where you are hunting? Then, is the scope that you are looking at, going to give you the low light preformance, sharpness, and clarity that you desire? Here are a few that I would take a look into. Leupold Nikon Vortex Check those out. If you have any questions, please let me know. I'd be happy to explain the differences. I'm here to help.

I like the nikon inline XR muzzleloader and the Nikon Omega if you can find them. They are both built for a ML. The leupold Ultimateslam would be my next choice, in 2-7.

I just purchased a Nikon Omega, I considered the Leupold, but for the money I went Nikon. Lots of good said about both scopes when I was digging around.

I like the Nikon Omega. I also used Burris Mil-Dot just because I had one but I do not think that mil-dot helps out a lot. I am not going to hunt with it over 200 yds so I can hold that. I know a couple guys that had scope reticles put in their scope just for their specific load. I just do not shoot it enough to spend the extra $$$ on that. We use duct tape on the bottom of the scope to keep the scope cleaner...they get pretty nasty.

My Knight carries a 3x9-50 Redfield, but it is an older model scope that I removed from a Ruger .300WM. It is dialed in at 200 yards with 1" groups! My primary use is elk hunting, so my preference was for a scope with good light transmission. So, consider the Burris or Nikon if that is what you are needing.

Zeiss made a fixed 4 power for awhile in their conquest line. I believe they have been discontinued but can still be found on the used or "new old stock" markets. For my dollar they are a great muzzle loading scope. I also use them on my slug guns. Clear, bright scopes with a decent bit of magnification and a good field of view...and they're a Zeiss.
These were made in 2 flavors 1 set for 50 yards of parallax correction the other 100. Make sure to get the 100 yard version unless its going on a scatter gun.

I had a CVA .45 caliber and used a Nikon 2-7x32 on it. I don't recall if it was an Omega or what. It's been a few years, but that scope worked well for me.

I have a Nikon Omega 3x9 on my Knight rolling block. Put it on 3 years ago (I think). Spot on every time. Put a lotta rounds through it, well over 300. And thats with different loads. Never has failed me.
I have a Pedorsoli rolling block with a Bushnell 1x4. It's BP rated but has never performed the way the Nikon has.
A buddy has the Leopold. And he says it's great, but it's too pricey for me.

My Knight Mountaineer sports a Vortex Viper. Great scopes, clear and crisp. Warranty is second to none.

I have a bushell FII on mine. BALLISTIC Retical works pretty good out to 200. But thats a little far more me.
What ever you get think about your range. If its a 100 and under gun..then just worry about durability/clarity then power
