Weird. This Corbin dude comes back over a year later and posts in the same thread.

My head hurts too. I know if "I" shoot a hog behind the ear a 223 will do the job and he fals straight down. But, just in case I use a 30-06 almost exclusively. Wide range of bullet weights and will kill just about anything I have the opportunity to hunt.

CHC hit it on the nose when he said, "A flat nosed or round nosed bullet is going to transmit more of the energy of the bullet to the shoulder muscles of an animal than a spitzer or pointed bullet is." True "knock-down power" is really more than just the energy of a given projectile; it is the relationship between the projectile and the target, and how much of that energy is actually absorbed by the target.

It's possible for a .30 caliber bullet to whistle right through even a dog-sized critter without hitting any bone, vital organs, or enough muscular tissue to slow it down appreciably. In such a case, one could rightfully say that even a .30-06 lacked sufficient "knock-down power." On the other hand, a .22 Hornet that hits a bone might well break it, or hit muscle mass significant to transfer all the available energy to the animal's body. Yet nobody would ever claim that the .22 had greater knock-down power than the .30.

To expound on a theme that CHC has rightfully stressed, placing your shot where the bullet will transfer energy to a critical area of your target's body is really more important than ballistics potential, once a minimum ballistic level is reached. That's why I'm perfectly comfortable hunting with "just a .30-30," with which I've grown very familiar over the last 40-odd years of hunting. And when I was a kid, there was one time when I killed a buck with a shot in the eye from a .22lr. Very little of that knock-down power we're talking about, but he was DRT. Practice enough with your gun & caliber of choice, and it will have all the knock-down power you could want.

if you want knock down power use a 20MM auto canon, good luck with the Game Wardens and BATF Agents though.

Didn't know that CHC had been banned (not too surprised, though... he did get pretty riled up now & again. Doesn't alter my thinking he was right in his assertions on this thread.
