I own and have shot the XDs. Great gun. If it feels right in your hand you'll be happy with it. So far very reliable and accurate. I'm keepin mine.

You want be dissappointed in the xds. I have had one about a month and a half and love it. Do a search on thf and you will find several posts about it. My number 1carry gun now. Best carry 45 ever imo!

Check out a Kahr CW45- slim, 7 shots, great trigger. If the Taurus PT145 was, well, not a Taurus it would be great given the size and capacity.

If you're like me with a big hand then the XDs migh not be for you. I would suggest the xdm 3.8 .45 i ended up with that instead of the XDs it fits my h better and has three different options for back straps. Excellent piece!!

I have big hands and short fingers. The XDm 9/40 frame fits me like a glove. The XDm 45 frame is a little to big to get on the trigger properly. Have not tried it with the smaller backstrap.
The XDs is smaller, better fit in my hand. I nearly handled a Kahr 45 at CTD yesterday. XDs will most likely go IWB holster.

I've moved up to a full size Para High Cap. I think the Kirkpatrick holster lets me get away with carrying it and it not printing. I'm not that big, 5'11" and some small change and weigh 204 lbs. Have a H&K USP Compact, that works pretty well too.

I used to carry a Para P-12, which is pretty much a Commander frame, but my wife confiscated that when she got her CHL.

Have never shot an XD, held one once and the impression was like a Sig, it just didn't feel right in my hand.

Back when you were in the BP, they issued something besides
the improved slingshot didn't they grin

What were you issued or could you carry personal choice if you qualified?

I have this thing about carrying a gun I don't shoot/trail with regularly.
I carried a Sig P-226 in 9mm for upteen years. The DA/SA.
When we upgraded to Sig P226 in 357Sig with DAK, I caught myself trying to decock the sucker when making safe to holster. I am revolver trained thru & thru. If I were to buy a 1911 gun, I would have to train/shoot a lot to feel comfortable carrying it cocked and locked again.
Sig DAK or the Springfield XDm/s series will work well for me in a simplistic manner for a long time to come.
I still have a Sig with DA/SA and the Bersa Thunder 380 with the S&W 39/59 type safety/decocker.

When I was in the BP they issued revolvers. My first issue gun was a Colt Trooper that had been around for awhile and had seen better days. You could carry your own, and I bought a S&W 586. That was, and is, one smooth and sweet revolver. When I went in the BP, part of the qualification course was Bullseye shooting for the first half of the qual.

When I went to Customs is when things got fun. They gave me an unmarked car. Sent me to the District office in Laredo, where the Director personally took me to the armory and let me pick my own M-16 (yep, full auto.), pick my own Winchester trench gun shotgun, that was a heavy beast, complete with bayonet lug and ventilated handguard. I also got to chose my own Model 66 S&W and Model 60. I was told to take whatever ammo I thought I needed and to remember I was no longer chasing illegals.

I switched to my own Colt 1911 Series 70 and when Para first started they sold frames. I got the frame and put the Colt guts and slide on it and carried that for years. They said no more SA autos, so I bought a huge Smith auto, which I could carry SA, if I thought I needed to. I needed to daily. Then I got the crown prince of pistols that I've had, a H&K USP-1. When I went to firearms instructor school, the guys teaching it, could not make that gun jam or malfunction, no matter what they tried.

After I hurt my back, it was hard to carry the USP in an IWB holster and it was too heavy to sit at a desk most of the time. So, I added a Glock 30 to carry for office days and dug out the USP to work the River and to kick in doors. Issued long guns were an 870 with a rifled slug barrel and sights, and a Steyr Aug. The Aug was okay during the day once you got used to the bullpup stock. At night it was worthless so for River work at night (sight was a 1.5 power scope with metal sights on top. There was never enough light down on the River to see the sights at night even with a full moon) I took the 870 with alternating #4 buck and slugs.

Shortly after I cashed it in, they came out and said you could no longer carry your own.

Traded the H&K USP-1 and the Glock 30 for a Sig 1911, but as nice as it was that gun didn't like to run dirty or dry. It hung up on me a couple of times in IDPA matches, so out it went for the H&K Compact. It's only in the last year that I added the Para High Cap. Once Para fixed the sights, that became the go to gun.
Still have a G-26 to carry when I can't go looking like a slob, but the Para is much more of a comfort.

I carry a compact 1911 (Rock Island) with thin grips. It's heavy, but I love it.

XDS. Interesting anecdote though, deerfeeder!

I have a Colt New Agent that I've been putting through its paces since I bought it to make sure I can trust it as my carry gun. So far I have had no issues after about 400 rounds including random factory ammo and my own loads with Speer Gold Dot 185 grain.
It has a great trigger on it, about 4 lbs and very crisp, and is pretty accurate for a 3" barrel.
I've also been considering an XDS to carry in the summertime when I don't want to get the Colt all sweaty.

I have been very happy with my Colt Commander. Like the size for both carry and range shooting. The commander size in the 1911 is offered by several manufactures.

I've carried my Para P-12 Limited off and on for years, comfortably and without issue. Commander length slide with 12+1 capacity and 14+1 capacity with P-14 mags.

Dan Wesson CCO's are hard to beat.
Aluminum frame & round butt makes it really light and comfy.

Interesting comments and reasoning.

I shot an XDs last weekend for the first time and I have to say...although I'm not an XD guy - I really liked it. And more importantly - it shot great! I still prefer Glocks due to their simplicity but the XDs is not a bad choice.
