I bow hunt but I was given a crossbow. I want to update the scope, but don't know if crossbows use different scopes or if you can mount a rifle scope on a crossbow. Any info is appreciated?

You could and just make adjustments for longer distances by aiming higher. Most scopes for xbows have multiple redicles or dots for different distances. I just put a Nikon BDC designed for xbows on my wifes xbow. It is pretty sweet.

You should be able to get a red dot pretty cheap. I have one on my Barnett Wildcat and it works great.

recoil from xbows isnt much and you can find lots of good quality/good priced scopes directed to crossbow usage

I am running an excalibur vari-zone scope on mine, and liking it really well so far.
aiming points are right on the money and you dial it in for whatever velocity you shoot.
nice clear scope too.
