When starting on a ranch I shoot does till I don't see any then take a 2 week break. Then go back and shoot the rest of what I can find. Then once I have ratios like I want I kill the same number of doe as I have in doe fawns born that year.

Same thing in my neck of the woods. I'm not against shooting does, just won't do it at my house.

I shoot does with out a second thought. I agree with the previous post the ratio of does to bucks is important. Especially in drought years like we have had in recent years which limit the forage. I drew an antlerless hunt last year at one of the state parks and park rangers and management were very supportive of the hunt. The deer heard was very large with lots of does. They were really doing damage to plants and areas of the park. The same will happen on your lease if you do not manage the does in the heard.

i have been busted by more does than i ever have bucks. I shot a huge doe last year on opening day because she came in and started blowing and ran every deer off. She sat about 60 yards behind me and blew for about 30 min. That evening she came in with the same group from the morning and i let the air out of her. She held that arrow for all of 10 yards. She was delicious.

Ok gotta question I'm not a deer hunter so just wondering , you do people not keep the does that produce good bucks ? I mean if you got thousands of game cam pics an stuff of does at feeders with fawns an one grows up to be a monster buck why not keep the mother around that's producing the good bucks ? Seems every one only worrys bout keeping the good bucks around for breeding ?? Jw

Can you identify her? What you are doing when killing doe/buck numbers off is taking off the number of replacements(fawns) coming into replace them if you are at carrying capacity. You want a younger doe herd. It will mean a better genetic diversity. Younger does will be related to the buck doing the breeding. If everything comes together (right buck breeds the right doe to produce the right offspring) then the offspring of the doe and buck cross should be better than the sires. You hope.
