I'm looking to pick up a .45 to use as a range toy and as a primary hunting sidearm. I can get both for the same price to the money factor is a wash. I already own and enjoy at one XD but I'm not married to them. I'm open to the idea of trying something new and the Glock 21 fits the bill. To me, they're essentially the same gun just made by different people with a few minor differences. I could go either way here.
What's your take?

Glock, made in Austria. xD, made in Croatia. You decide!
In all seriousness, they pretty much are very equivalent pistols. I just prefer Glocks because I've been a Glcok guy for years.
You should take a look at the G lock Torture Test. There is a guy who beat the heck out of his 21 and the results speak for themselves.

Had a xd tactical 45 and loved it but after going to the glock armorers school i sold the xd and bought a 21, just based on simplicity of internals. Plus there is lots in the aftermarket for glock. Nothing against xd i just bought a xds compact 45.

I've owned both but settled on the XD only because I shoot more accurately with it. My brother is the exact opposite and chose the Glock.

For me, I prefer the grip angle on the Glocks. So, it would be Glock for me. If you already have a XD, I'd lean that route to keep the feel the same between the pistols. But, I love my Glocks!

Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Yup. However, I have an XDm .45 ACP Service Model as well and the grip is much more comfortable than the Glock to me.

My XD45 feels like the same grip angle as my 1911. Plus I think the XD pistols look better than Glocks. Can't go wrong with either in terms of reliability. XD has more features on it and is considered a "safer" pistol (grip safety, trigger safety, loaded chamber indicator and optional thumb safety).

First of all, not one of the 2 options he was asking about. Sorry, this is just a pet peeve of mine. Second, 8 vs 13. How many do you really want? Finally, I completely agree if you can get a nice one.

I don't feel that I can get the same quality 1911 for 500.00 out the door as I can a Glock or an XD.

They are both reliable weapons. They will both get the job done. Go to the ranger and shoot both. Buy whichever gun feels right.
I hate the grip angle on the Glocks and they feel unbalanced to me.
I hate the grip safety on the XD but overall the gun feels much better in my hands.
Both will go bang when you pull the trigger.

Glock! I have a 21 and a 20, they go to the woods with me MOST of the time. Yes, I have a 1911 Norinco based shooter, but it stays in the safe. It will group better than the Glocks with target loads, BUT I have more $ in it than the 2 Glocks!

Personally I have had a handfull of Glocks and a couple XD's to me the xd is smoother I like the grip safety also glocks naturally point high for me which is no issue... I can go either way myself but when the xd can be had new in box with 3 mags for $450 ish adn sometimes cheaper (sale or gun show) I would lean toward the XD. It also has cut rifling so you can shoot straight up lead if you reload!

I would pick a platform and stick with it. I am only partial to the Glock platform because that is what I have always had and feel most comfortable shooting/carrying. There is something to be said for sticking with a platform and honing your skills.

i carry the XD45 on duty. One thing to think about-what are the mags made of? IF (GOD FORBID!) we get another ban, the XD mags will last longer. The XD also has a smaller grip, which is a big thing for me. The Glocks are just too big for what they are. And the XD points more naturally for me.
The reason i carry an XD is if i had scratched a good 1911, i would have been pissed!
In God we trust, all others get run through TCIC. Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Lack of Planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.

I think I'm going to start calling the Tactical XD .45 a unicorn. They both seem to be equally hard to find. I can get the service or compact model all day long, that 5" model though is a whole different story.

I'm sure it's something with the internals but can one/both of you elaborate on why an XD is more complicated than a Glock? On the surface I'm just not seeing it.....easy take down, easy operation and easy controls on both.

In 45acp, XD stoked with 200gr XTP's without a doubt. A glock, go for the 20 in 10mm with a KKM barrel. Both are awesome and will get the job done.

I have never torn into an xd, but after going to the school i came back and looked at my xd, and decided against it. I am issued a glock but did not own one, after armores school i bought two. Biggest reason is i shoot using trigger reset and to my knowledge the glock is the only gun that will function if the trigger return spring breaks, provided you shoot using trigger reset. Three pins taken out and the whole glock is disassembled. I prefer a 1911 (have six of them) like the xd, but from a pure combat stand point i chose the glock. Both would be a good choice. I prefer to work on my own stuff and just looking at the xd it appears to have more parts and not as simple as the glock. If you have no intentions of working on it, go with what fits your hand the best, both are great reliable hi cap 45 shooters. If all else fails buy BOTH!!!!!!! You can never have two many 45s!!!!

Thanks for all the replies. I'll probably end up with an XD if I can ever find a 5" model. I think I'd be happy enough with the 4" compact but I just want the 5" model. For now though I'm pretty content since I just traded for a Kimber Stainless II.
